cam swap

A friend of mine has a cam he wants to give me for my Camaro. He said it was a truck 350 cam from a TBI engine. Does anyone have any idea what the specs would be on this cam. I might put it in my 305 Cross-Fire Camaro.

Thanks

youre better off buying a cam that matches what CFI can accommodate. rather than hoping this one will work.

Re: cam swap

If it's a stock truck TBI cam it's just as tiny as your stock one.

It will be something like a 195/202@.050", .390"/.410" lift

A performance cam and lifter set can be had for $70 to $200 new.

Look at elgin, sealed power, summit house brand
Something in the 204/214@.050" range or maybe 214/224@.050" depends on other mods to your engine

Re: cam swap

The only major mod I plan for my engine is the Renegade intake....from what images I've seen it should flow much more fuel and air.

I would like to swap out my 3.23 gears for 3.73 and install a shift kit in the stock 700-R4

I've already purchased Hooker shorty header and off road y-pipe...I plan on removing the emissions equipment from the engine. I have plans on putting a Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust system too.

One thing I'm not sure about is what tuning will need to be done and how I'm going to go about doing it. My instructor at school seems to have his doubts about what I can do with this set up, but I refuse to believe him and what to see what I can do to make this run great.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: cam swap

The limitations of the engine are only your imagination and willingness to go the distance needed to make it happen. EFI aside, it's just a small block chevy V8 with infinite build options. To make it work with EFI, you simply need to understand EFI. As far as tuning the stock ECM, you would be better off either swapping to a newer control system(89+) that will provide more flexibility. There is one system, a piggy back add on to the ECM, that will allow on board tuning of the ECM through a laptop, but I think it only fits the later ECMs. It's called something like EBL/DFI. For the best advice in this area, PM Rrob over in the DIY/PROM board of this forum. I personally went with an aftermarket DFI system that, with my background in auto electrical, easily tied into the vehicle's factory wiring, utilizing the factory fans and relays, and more on my 87 IROC. It has run for 16 years with no problems and I can make whatever mods I dream of to the motor and the ECM will support it with a little tuning through my laptop.

A free cam from a well meaning friend is never the way to go. A new cam and lifters just isn't that pricey and you really want to find something that fits your system. Plus, a used flat tappet cam, isn't a good idea anyway, with the risk of peeling lobes. The engine is a system and for the best results, you need to look at it that way. All parts should be matched to each other. There is always some flexibility. As you learn more about engine building and the affect of different changes, you will be better able to determine what parts fit each other.

The exhaust you're planning is more than you need, even with a power increase, but having the exhaust a little large won't hurt anything and allows for future upgrades.

Most of the emissions equipment, aside from the AIR pump, doesn't really affect full throttle power, since it all shuts down on hard throttle. I do however understand the desire to clear out some of the underhood clutter.
