Changing the in tank fuel pump to an inline pump
Is it possible to change the in tank to an inline fuel pump? Would it work?

Well I've got to replace my fuel pump as it is, but I'd like to re do the unit by putting the pump on the outside of the tank

Many moons ago , I put a 90 Towncar's 5.0 into a 60s Galaxie with the complete original towncar's fuel injection . Naturally , since a 60s car has no intank pump , I needed to come up with something . After considering installing a pump in the tank , which was quickly ruled out as the tank wouldn't accomodate the pump's depth or sump area in such a flat shaped tank , I decided to go with an external to the tank pump and had really great results . Now bear in mind , this was a true multiport injection and not TBI where lower fuel pressures apply , and the engine ran as though it was still being fed from it's original tank , so obviously I got the pressure right . The external pump was somewhat expensive compared to an in tank pump , maybe not being immersed in fuel for cooling required a different more expensive design ? But once plumbed in it lasted the 5 or so years I owned the car , till I got bored and sold it for something different (a 53 Buick , to be exact) . I know that was a Ford story
but the point is solid , provide your fuel rail with the proper pressure and GPH rating as original , and it really won't care whether the pump is in the tank or on some nice low spot of the subframe rail where it would be just a tiny wee bit more accessable than the original location

Would it be more trouble to do that than to just fix the stock in tank pump?

It's going to be noisy on the outside. Just take your time and replace the pump in the tank. You should never take short cuts. It's not that bad once you get started. Air tools makes things quicker.

Well do y'all have an idea of how to get the rear end off the car and have it jacked up at the same time? I haven't founo a good place to put some blocks under because I'm not used to working with a frame like these. I'm used to full frames.

Hmm ... was it run low on fuel a lot ... anything under .25 tank ain't good for pumps as fuel is what keeps them cool .. also if u buy a new in tank if just going stock get a genuine ac Delco pump and sock whether it's tbi or tpi don't matter get a tpi pump... or upgrade to an Aeromotive, walbro, etc. But don't buy the biggest baddest one they offer unless u plan on making 500+ hp in near future

In a German forum there was a thread where someone states that he bridged the time until getting a new fuel pump by putting another one into the feed line somewhere in the engine bay. He said that it worked nicely. The fuel was sucked through the bad pump.

Jack up the rear, put jack stands under the rear frame mounts (just forward of the tires), and the use the jacks and other stands as needed to maneuver the gas tank and axle/rear suspension.
I tried in-line pumps when I swapped motors (new one didn't have mechanical provision drilled). I would recommend against an inline pump in our cars without a sump to gravity feed them. The fuel retreats into the tank and you run the pump dry for a few seconds while I sucks fuel out through the top of the tank, through the line and down to the pump. I burned up 2 Holley blue and one Holley black in-line pump before learning this lesson.
I finally spent a weekend dropping the tank and swapping in a 255lph in-tank pump and Mallory fuel pressure regulator.

I replaced my fuel pump by myself in my garage using jackstands, THIS FORUM and a little bit of muscle. I had never attempted anything like that before. Be patient and methodical. You'll be fine.
