TDC with piston stop. Lose crank bolt

Hey guys. Trying to find TDC using a Piston stop. Problem is when I try to rotate crank back counterclockwise the crank pulley bolt loosens. Would it work if I use the tool first on the compression stroke. Remove the tool rotate some more the insert it again? Would I insert it back on the exhaust stroke?Name: 929510AE-BDC2-483A-B23A-B8BCE9845EE8_zpsuocpk07x.jpg

I hope that photo isn't what it currently looks like while using a piston stop. The rockers need to be off on the cylinder that the stop is in or the valves will hit the stop. You also need to use a degree wheel to determine where TDC is.

Honestly I have been doing it with out backing off the rockers. I've mostly watched videos on YouTube and not a single one mentioned the possibility of the tool hitting the valves :|. I've only ever installed the tool after putting my thumb over the sparkplug hole and feeling air push my finger off. Should I be worried?
