1990 firebird formula help

So my 1990 firebird formula occasionally likes to give itself gas. the check engine light comes on and with me not pressing on the gas it goes to 1000-1500 rpms. I've gone 30 mph without giving it gas. the way i stop is putting it in neutral it usually happens when the car is warmed up for awhile and when i turn off my car when it is warm then turn it back on in like 10 minutes. I know I could hook up a code reader but I just wanted to check here for some ideas
