Serpentine Belt System?

I was wondering if my serpentine belt system on my 89 L03 will go right over on an older style maybe early 80s style 350 block?

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

Yes. Just make sure you get the correct water pump. Serpentine turns the pump counter clockwise. A V-belt pump is clockwise.

Get the water pump for the year of car you pulled the serpentine set up from. In this case, just order one for an "89" and you'll be fine. I assume you're wanting to swap in a 350 to your car?

I put a serpentine set up from an 88 into my 84 Trans Am.

The other thing is the Alternator and AC Compressor in the pre 87 cars are on opposite sides of the car so you'll need to re-arrange some wiring in the engine bay if you're doing that. I just opened my harness up to access the respective wires and re-routed them around my intake.

Yeah, if you're simply putting a new motor in your current car, then no wiring needs to be changed. Just order parts for your 89 and you should be fine. Upgrading to a 350 will require a 350 knock sensor. You'll need bigger injectors and don't use your 305 heads on the 350. They're way too small to make good power. Recommend Vortec's if your on a budget.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

I will be going carb and I will be using a set of 083 heads with upgraded springs, flat tappet cam with around 224 duration and 470 lift with a good exhaust system im hoping around 300hp. Something fairly strong but mild enough to run a/c and no driveability issues.Last engine I built I used vortecs on and was happy with the power im just going with the 083s this time cause Im getn a great deal on them and they should be fine for my mild build.

Wow, carb. I'd recommend staying with TPI honestly. I'm actually looking to go from carb to TPI. hehe

If thats all you are really wanting to achieve, Id stick with the TPI as well.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

IIRC the early style ( perimeter valve cover ) heads are missing one of the holes that are used to mount the pass side Serpentine accessory bracket. Some people drill/tap a hole,... most do not.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

My current engine is not TPI it is TBI and the 083 heads im getting are 87-92 centerbolt L98 TPI iron F-body heads but I am putting them on an older style block and flat tappet cam setup. Im going carb for easy tuning im just not that savvy on chip burning and all that factors in trying to run fuel injection.
