To start off, im trying to get my step dads old camaro running good and back on the road. It has sat for about 15 or more years and he passed away just shy of 2 years ago. I dropped the tank to get all the old fuel out. I pulled the sending unit off to get the fuel out and i want to replace it just because. Its not broken or anything i just want to replace it so its not an issue later on. Problem is i cant find one anywhere. Ive done the forum searching and no one seems to know where to get one. This is for an 84 Z28 and i do believe its carbed.
If it's not broken, don't "fix" it. There's not much to go wrong with them. More then likely they aren't made new anymore. I'd change the sock at the bottom and put it back in. Nice car BTW. I love that color combination.
Im more of a- if you have part/s off that are a pain in the rear to get off and theres other parts within those hard parts to get off, might as well replace everything while its all apart. More or less preventative maintenance. If I cant find one to replace in the next few days ill just put it back on. Also for those short black gas lines that connect between the metal gas lines, can i just get those at any auto store or farm store? I cut them because i didnt want to break a gas line or break a knuckle pulling on them lol. Figured the $10 or so it would be to replace them is worth some blood and pain saved.
The camaro was his daily driver when he bought it but it eventually became his project car. There wasnt anything wrong with it he just wanted to fix a few dents and repaint it and put new decals on it. He started on it years back and had one side done and primed. Then he kinda ran out of time to work on it then the cancer took over. The picture i posted was when we had got it back from the body shop. We took it to someone (a friend of ours) and told them just to put it back together for us. He went a step further and painted anything that needed it. He had to look up how the aftermarket convertable top worked, apparently it is one of the higher quality designs that was available at the time.
I think illl just put the old one back in. Cant find one anywhere lol. I ended up getting gas lines from auto zone. Kinda weird how the 3 lines are all different sizes.
Im gonna bump this back up. Got back to working on it today. I do think the fuel sending unit is somewhat "broken" but it may be fixable without replacing the whole thing. I noticed theres a rubber piece that connects the white round thing to the metal line but mine is os deteriorated that its not connecting them anymore. Im assuming they need to be connected but im not 100% sure. Other pictures ive looked at show them connected. Im wondering if i can just use fuel line hose to connect them or is there something else I have to use? Im gonna work on getting a picture up after I post this.
I didn't look very close in the first place but it looks like you've the electric in-tank pump. I just noticed you have a H.O. car, I read at some point in 84 L69 5.0's got both electric and mechanical pumps to combat fuel boiling problems so your car may have both. You will need to replace that hose. You could change the electric pump while you're at it for preventative measures. Though it does seem like people have gone without that pump and just used the mechanical, you would still need to modify the pick up to get fuel at the bottom of the tank. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/carb...tank-fuel.html
First off, can I change just the pump or does it have to be the whole sending unit? If just the pump where do I get it? And if the whole sending unit would a sending unit from an 85 work?
And secondly I did plan to change the seal as well. Just havent had much time to work on this. I will have time this week though.
And lastly, it always seems to be my luck to work on those cars that seem to be inbetween two years when manufacturers couldnt make up their mind on what to do when changing stuff lol. My 94 chevy 2500 was the same way on some things.

RockAuto lists the electric pump. The tank seals typically come with the pump. I still wouldn't worry about the sending unit unless the fuel gauge was inop. And even then a used or NOS piece is the most likely source for a sending unit.
That looks correct to me. I tend to prefer an AC Delco or Delphi but in todays market you don't really know where it's coming from anyway. I once bought an Airtex EGR solenoid and a genuine AC Delco part came out of the box....
Agree with the comments above - you won't find a new sending unit. If the gas gauge worked, replacing the pump & strainer should be all you need to do.
