Need Help Fast!!!!! MY JOB DEPENDS ON THIS!!!!!!

i am having trouble getting my 87 LG4 trans am to run properly. the problem is that it hardly wants to crank and when it does, it stalls almost immediately. if i am lucky to get to run for a few seconds, it is very rough and has almost no throttle response whatsoever....occassionally it will respond to throttle but not past 2000 RPMs...i am getting a code 41, but i do not know what that code is or what it relates to. any help would be greatly appreciated as i have to have this car running by this afternoon, tomorrow morning at the latest or else i will have no way to get to work and could lose my job. there is also an exhaust leak at the Y-pipe where it bolts to the catalytic converter fi that has anything to do with it. thanks in advance for any help.

peace,
menace

Its related to the spark system. Check the wiring at the back of the distributor, especially the 4 wire connector and make sure the wires are not damaged/broken/shorted. Also make sure the ground for the coil is good.

Double check all your vacuum lines, plug wires etc. 12 is a normal code and should be there. More times then not, when a car suddenly starts running bad and all else checks out, it turns out to be something really simple. Try the old carb cleaner around the vacuum lines trick to find the really sneeky leaks. If you spray the line and the engine reves, there's your leak.

i understand that the code 12 is standard to show that the ECm is functioning, but after i get the normal 3 flashes, it continues to show the code 12. the GM code 12 is: diagnostic mode/ ECM functioning...no distributor pulses. this also correlates with the code 41 that i was getting (EST circuit failure..no distributor pulses) which is what leads me to believe that it is in the distributor. i am trying to figure out if there is a way to know for sure before i drop money on a whole new distibutor and then that doesnt solve the problem.

i am unable to check for any kind of vacuum leaks b/c the engine wont stay running. if i can get it to crank, the idle will drop to 500 RPMs or so (no matter how high the idle is adjusted) and and either stalls on its own or stumbles and bogs out when i hit the gas. i cant seem to remedy this problem.

I would use some old school. Do you have spark? Do you have air? Do you have fuel? The problem sounds electrical. Check for short to ground or a faulty connection at the ecm. Check the rotor and cap. Check the plug wires and your plugs. Then check your distributor pick up. Maybe a possible coil problem? Start there, and if this doesn't fix the problem then go with the new distributor. Good luck
