Starter problems

So i recently took my starter off and forgot to put the shims on but today i put them back on with the starter and i noticed that my flywheel had sights of grinding on it. The engine is cranking but not turning over. Is the bendix not popping out when it should be? Should i replace the starter?

Re: Starter problems

First, rotate the flywheel to a place with good teeth. Then try to start the car. The engine tends to stop at the same places so you wind up starting at the same point on the flywheel. If it works well with the good teeth you can rule out the starter and bendix and start hunting a flywheel.

Re: Starter problems

The car started right up before i took it off the first time (when the clutch switch hooked up) but i didnt know that the clutch switch was jacked. So i took the starter off and got it tested. But now it is messed up, and i just messed with the interior power wires, which are hooked up to my starter solenoid. is the starter not getting enough power?

Re: Starter problems

OK, get a test light and see if you have power to the small (field wire) on the starter, that wire should be mounted on the small post closest to the block. It is only powered when the key is turned to start. If you have power to this wire you can rule out the starting circuit. This is a different problem from what you described with the fly wheel. you will need a buddy to hit the starting switch while you check with a test light......or some really long wires so you can do yourself.
