89 Camaro. No crank no start
Bought my 89 Camaro Rs 305 from a friend and when he had it it was running just fine when he had it. Said previous owner bypassed the neutral safety switch and one day it started smoking and since then the car wouldn't crank or start. Only way it will crank is getting wire from battery to starter. Also under the steering column looks like someone before had a kill switch, toggle ignition and a remote start and aftermarket security system, but wasn't a problem when it was running. I was thinking it might be the computer but when I checked nothing looked wrong with it.

See this is first post, welcome to the forum. In your post you mention that the neutral safety switch started smoking. Have you replaced the switch? Did you check the fuses? Do your headlights dim when you attempt to crank it. Give us a little more info on what you have done to it.

Re: 89 Camaro. No crank no start
thanks !
This all happened with the previous owner and I am still in touch with him.
Since it started smoking he never replaced the neutral safety I did however it didn't change anything. The headlights only turn on when I pull the light **** on the dash. When I crank nothing happens with the car or the lights. Since then I've gotten a new ignition switch, installed it and when I reconnected the battery the horn would go off and I had no way to stop it so I unplugged the fuse. Other than that I checked all fuses and they're all fine.
I also read about the neutral safety switch having to be set a certain way ? Any other info you might need ?

Sounds like a smoked fusible link or 2 down by the starter.

Re: 89 Camaro. No crank no start
Just to clarify, where was it smoking? Near the neutral safety switch or elsewhere?

Yes near the neutral safety switch where he said it was bypassed. What I can see it doesn't looks fine all the wires look okay under the bezels

Any luck? This sounds like my car that's been sitting for ~3 years because it frustrated me so much. Mine melted the yellow wire going into the starter enable relay. Replaced it and bypassed the relay with no luck. Replaced all the fusible links too.
