1988 firebird 305 tbi simple timing question and opinion

Ok, so you guys would know best. What's the best basic timing to set these to. Because I did 6 degrees advance base timing. And it's peppy, but I'm not happy with it. What's the best base timing to set it to. For optimal results. Because originally I timed the car with the est plugged in. And advanced it like crazy. To what the car had the most performance with. And it was very impressive. I'm sure I could of damaged something by keeping it where it was at.But it caused a idle surge. I fixed the issue by disconnecting est and setting base timing at 6 degrees. So do you guys have any input. Or do I settle for regular base timing.

Simple. Take some time to test different degrees. Bump it up 2*. See how it runs. Better? Try another 2*. Worse? Go back to where it ran best. Just word to the wise the computer is still advancing timing thinking you were at 6* base.

OK. I didn't know if any of you guys had a specific like hot spot known for the best peak timing for a 305 like 10 degrees advanced at base timing. But I will be trying this weekend just As you explained in increments of 2. Thank you by the way. Seriously

It can vary engine to engine even if the components are the same. Plus we really *don't* know if the timing tab is accurate so you may see better results than someone else with a near identical engine. Plus why limit yourself to what someone else says is good. 10* may be great, 12* may have hard cranking issues and 11* may be PERFECT. Worth it to find out yourself.

Seat of the pants, my '91 RS, L03 T5 liked no more than 4* BTDC. It added a little pep over the stock 0* setting. But more than that it did not like.

I have not messed with it yet on the T/A with A/T.

Yea mine is the same tbi 305 5 speed. It runs good on 6 base timing. I may start at 0 and see how it is. Then go up 2 at a time. It also has developed a misfire now. After I got home I drove it and was shaking my head. This car wants more attention then my girlfriend. Lol but misfire first then timing. Should get it all figured out tomorrow night.
