Gas stabilizer for storage?

I was wondering what you guys thought of pouring some gas stabilizer in the tank if your car is being stored for a period of time .My car is put away for roughly 5 months and i've never had any problem, but i was watching a segment of My classic car and the guy(Jay Leno)said that modern gas is only good for about 2-3 months and it starts to gum up.He had a car that hung up a valve and hit the piston because of it .This sounded kind of far fetched to me,but i'm the first to admit that i don't know it all...

Well, from my experiences...

My father used to own a yard service business... It was just me and him... we'd store our equipment in our un-heated garage with no problems... they ran a little rough when they were first started in the spring, and were fine after a tank of fresh gas or two. When we stored them in the winter we'd run the tank of gas dry to make sure the carbs didn't have any gas left in them. Varnished floats are not a good thing!!!

With that, yes gas will tend to varnish and gum things up if left to sit (you carb guys know this!)... I don't know how well they work, but I assume they won't hurt anything... go ahead and try it... The one that sticks out in my mind is Sta-Bil.

If the car is being stored for any amount of time... bring it up to running temp at least once every month, more if you can... and to benefit the tranny (and tires and wheel bearings!), take it for a trip up to speed and run it through the gears... granted this is weather permitting, but this way everything stays semi-fresh and lubed. Remember that after about 3 months oil tends to turn to crap... so even if you change it before you store, don't forget to change it after about that time (if you do indeed run it for a while) and again before you go womping on it in the spring...

You probably know all that already though... IMO, use it unless you hear something negative about it. (which I personally havn't)
