Service Engine Soon light
Hey guys, I don't have access to a proper scanner and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion or knew of a common problem. Car in question is a 91 RS Camaro with a 305 (throttle body injection) and automatic trans. Currently sitting at about 56,000 miles. Last fall the light would come on from time to time usually in the afternoon on my way home from work. Some times the light would go out while driving but if it did nott it would always reset after turning off the motor and re starting it. Over the winter I took a gamble and replaced the O2 sensor. Now that spring is here I have been driving it again and still have the same problem. It happens only on warmer days, all of the gauges are reading normal.
Thanks

I performed the test and came back with code 32. After a Google search it appears to be a common problem related to the EGR valve and or switch. I will have to look into it some more.

The code 32 is thrown when the map doesn't see egr. This can be caused bye a broken vacuum line, egr valve, egr solenoid or wiring issue.
The egr will be lettered p or n indicating if it's a positive or negative pressure. Make sure you get the right one if this turns out being the issue. Carboned up or damaged diaphragm.

A basic code reader is cheap (<$30?). You can find them on Amazon, if you think having one around might be useful to you. You don't need a big expensive diagnostic tool to grab codes.
While it's possible to jump the terminals on the OBD port and sit there and watch how many times the SES flashes, it's a pain in the butt. Plus, some code readers will even give you a short description of what the code means.
You can borrow one of the expensive diagnostic tools from an auto parts store, if you really need to. The big chain stores just require a deposit and/or to leave a form of ID with them if you're just going to use it in the parking lot for a few minutes.

Re: Service Engine Soon light
Hey guys just a follow up. I put a new EGR valve in a week ago that I ordered on Rock Auto. Thus far the check engine light has not come back on. Thanks for the help; now to deal with the VATS key!
Re: Service Engine Soon light
The VATS system failures are usually the chip in the key or broken wire in the ignition key cylinder. Have put many ignition lock cylinders in all body platforms. There's a way to bypass system with correct resistor wired into circuit.

It turned out to be the replacement key I bought from the local hardware store. I am considering one of the plug in by pass systems on eBay specifically the one with the kill switch. Just haven't made up my mind yet.
