odometer question
ok heres the deal im not trying to commit fraud by rolling odo back im trying to fix an issue with the odometer and trip meter not working.
i disassembled my cluster and took speedo out, took it apart and found the stepper gears were so badly broken that they no longer made contact with the motor. i ordered a replacement cluster that has 209k. i want the new speedo to read the correct miles. so how can i turn the numbers to read what the old one says
1st pic shows original cluster. 2nd pic shows broken gears. 3rd pic is new cluster.
i dont want my car to show that many inaccurate miles

Re: odometer question
The shaft holding the idlers needs to be removed and the rotors set to the desired positions, then reassemble.
Although a mileage statement or disclaimer is required in many jurisdictions at the time of sale, most states have exemptions (don't care about) odometer mileage on vehicles of this age. The exceptions seem to those states where much of the "thinking" occurs below shoulder level instead of above it.

Re: odometer question
Why would anyone want to do something like that?

Kind of like ripping the tag off a mattress. Mileage is way too easy to fake on these cars. A strip of tape applied to the counter wheels helps hold them in position while getting the parts back in position. The rest is so easy it's not really even worth explaining.

Pffft... I've done this around ten times for various people and it isn't too hard. Just be real gentle with the parts the plastic on the inside is very brittle and is super easy to break.

Re: odometer question
so the new speedometer just suffered the same problem the old one did. im getting real tired of this crap, and i ordered a new drive gear stainless steel version
https://www.shapeways.com/product/KA...370&li=ostatus
anybody have any positives to say about the stainless one over the others? also putting everything back together could i get away using JB Weld to put the shaft back in? i still have a tip to fit inside the hole

I'm a little confused, so bear with me, but you show an '86 Trans Am in the signature but the photos show an 80 MPH speedometer. My '86 TA has a 140 MPH speedometer. The replacement cluster in the photos also has a 6K redline tach instead of the original 5K. Is this a carbed TA?

a week later after i reinstalled everything the odometer again stopped working. took it all apart again to fine the drive gear also fell apart.
now i ordered a new drive gear from shapeways.com made by lightsaber2003 i ordered the stainless version and want to know if this gear has any positives over the others? and if i can use JB Weld to put the shaft back in since i used a Dremel to ground off the press fitting and was able to pull it out

Re: odometer question
well i got the issue resolved, first i ordered a new drive gear from Shapeways i also ordered a shoulder screw (Ampg303 Shoulder Screw), then went to hardware store and got a thin nut for the screw (4-40 threads)
to get the old shaft out i grounded off the press fitting with my Dremel and with some wiggling it pulled out then drilling the hole slightly bigger using my 7/64 drill bit.
once the gear arrived i had to use a 1/8 drill bit to get the gear to fit on the screw, i also had to file down the lip on the smaller end of the gear
applied a little Lithium grease to the shaft, install the gear, install the gear on the odo and used the nut to secure it down.
the gear spun freely and turned the counters perfectly. with the screw/nut in place you wont get the screw for the speedometer on that side, so i opted to leave it out but if your worried you could ziptie it.
i didnt take pics of the job but did get one of the final product. i plan on doing this to the "replacement" cluster i ordered hoping it would fix the problem. ill take some pics of that
just so nobody shuns me i got this procedure from another thread here ELCamino81 posted it
however reinstalling the speedometer needle was a task on its own. i would up have to download a GPS app on my smartphone to get the speedometer to read accurate since i did not mark any positions before removal. but after i noticed if you turn the needle to 20MPH there is a notch on the black plastic rotator inside and when its facing outward you can hold it there with your finger, pull the needle and reinstall it. ill try to get pics of that to when i do the other cluster. but im happy with the results and hopefully this helps somebody out. if anyone has any constructive criticisms i would love to hear it
