Hey all so going to replace an aftermarket relay for a fan kit. Originaly this was the kit i bought from jegs http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...10560/10002/-1 (Jegs 10560)

I was going to replace it with a relay from jegs but then today i was in autozone just buying some dot 3 and noticed this relay.

I bought it because it looked identical (along with pin locations) except the only thing throwing me off is on the original picker it shows (NO- 40A/ NC-30A) while this Novita just shows 40A/12VDC and on Novita website it just states (maximum 40amps)

Will this Novita relay that only shows 40A/12VDC work as a replacement for a relay that shows Normal Open 40A/ Normal closed 30A??

Looks like a standard spdt relay.

 

Yup, all pretty much the same thing. Terminals are even numbered the same.

Relays are somewhat universal, once you get past the pinout and the contact ratings. They're kinda like switches that way. Which is no real surprise... all they are is, an electrically operated switch.

 

They are all pretty much the same. Use it.

Does anyone know why one shows the NC/NO rating while the other does not? Manufacturer preference or something similar?

 

I have never seen different ratings for NC/NO before.
It does not make sense, since the same current flows through the same movable contact.

 

That is true, but two other items are involved - The stationary contacts may be different, AND the contact pressure is probably greater when the relay is energized than when the return spring pulls the armature open. That's a sign of a marginal quality relay. Since you'll likely only be using the N.O. contacts it probably will not be a problem.

Another item to remember is that REAL relays have three current ratings: Resistive closure current (make), resistive opening current (break), and inductive current. In your case, since a fan motor is involved, it would be more important to know the inductive current rating. A contact having a 40A resistive rating may only have a 15A inductive rating. If that's the case, the relay won't likely last long switching a 250W fan motor.

On a positive note, if the relay fails at least the wiring will be in place so you can install a better quality one if necessary.

 

Well the kit is advertised as 30amp and it worked fine for 3+ years...? Thats why i just wanted to be safe with a 40 amp relay, but i guess it works the other way

What would be a quality relay you can point me to?
