1986 caprice originality HELP!

I know this is an F-body forum but B-bodys also have a lot in common and I own a 1986 5.0 4BBL 305 caprice that I wish to keep stock though I do plan on making some light upgrades. I am hoping that someone here has a 1986 caprice with an engine that is bone stock and unmolested since what I need is some photos of the original factory unmolested engine vacuum and electrical harness routing. All I need are photos

It's essentially a huge amount of emissions junk. Sounds like someone did you a favor and got rid of the clutter and weight. That stuff is ancient technology and for the most part no longer needed if you run a proper, modern, three-way catalyst.

Re: 1986 caprice originality HELP!

It's all still there and hooked up, also the car itself runs and drives great with good fuel economy and throttle response for a V8 from the 80's. all I need to do is route everything back as it was when it rolled out the factory. It's just that when I got it the plastic wire protecting tubes/looms where broken and the wires were all over, I kinda got it routed in a way so the wires wouldn't get burned. All I need is another 5.0 or 5.7 4bbl 86 caprice for reference. The reason I'm keeping the emission components because I live in California where the emissions stuff is required.

I beg to differ depending on what state you live in and if you still intend on driving it on the roads legally and pass the visual and sniffer test.

Re: 1986 caprice originality HELP!

Exactly what I mean MY87LT. If it's stock keep it stock bolting on an aftermarket carburetor will not increase power nor make it run better if everything else is stock. This is currently my daily driver and have no intentions of removing any of the original emission components, I plan on keeping this GM B-body all GM. My problem right now is that with previous mechanics moving hoses and harnesses the brittle plastics and hoses broke or disintegrated and when repaired were not repaired like it was originally nor routed like it was originally. With the air cleaner off I need close up photos of how the original engine vacuum hoses and electrical wiring was routed from factory.

Yeah that's unfortunate that you have to keep that crap. I suggest pulling the whole engine out in favor of a proper mill - something with 671 perhaps.... and then putting it back in when you need to go for testing.

That's what I would do if forced to live in the Soviet Republic of California. Sure glad I don't have to resort to drastic measures to pull one over on the man.

Fortunately here in Oregon we have not such foolishness.

Soviet California? Yea like we haven't heard that one before. Btw, we don't all agree on all the regulations here in the state. And don't be surprised if Oregon adopts our air laws eventually.

They pretty much have in the metro areas. It's really simple to bypass it though. Just register the car to an address outside the test area. Been doing it that way for 20 years myself and no one has questioned it or cared. The whole thing is just a money grab and is incredibly easy to get around. The test stations are run by the lazy government employees and for 96+ cars are even self-service now.

I doubt they will ever expand it to include all counties. We have too much rural and in the next decade or so it will become a non issue anyway as electrics take over the market in the testing areas of high population density.
