What to keep in toolbox

So I just bought my first truck so I can pull my GTA back and forth from the track (and because I started a job that isn’t hot rod friendly) and it came with a toolbox already in it. My question to you guys is what should I put in it for general roadside repairs and the occasional track repairs? I already have your run of the mill tool kit, jack and 4 way and jumper cables.

Re: What to keep in toolbox

I don't take much because I'm not willing to fix much at the track. More serious racers will take a lot of tools and parts with them. Take as much as you need to do repairs that you think you would be willing to do.

Trailers sometimes have problems more often than cars. You need a way to change tire on trailer and winch a dead car onto trailer. I throw in a set of wheels chocks, a floor jack (or ramp to get trailer axle off the ground), some sturdy sections of 2x10 wood in case the ground is soft, and a block of 8x8 wood to put under the trailer jack. I have a hand winch that will bolt to the trailer. Big hammer, big set of channel locks to move or squeeze stubborn parts on trailer, and a multimeter.

I also keep a ****** strap, shovel, and tire chains in the truck in winter, Personally I have a jump battery instead of jumper cables so I can be self-sufficient. The battery also has a small little air compressor that can come in handy.

A spare ICM with a little bit of good thermal paste

I carry a breaker bar under my seat (unexpected trips to junk yard/protection) and a basic craftsma
n set for basic stuff and have a fold up jimmy in back pack as I don't want to ever be stuck locked out of my car again in cold weather

Re: What to keep in toolbox

I have a bunch of stuff inside my enclosed trailer such as straps, broom, rags, fluids. battery cables, jack and stands

The toolbox I take to the track really doesn't have a whole lot in it. Just a small 6 drawer top box. Set of sockets, wrenches and misc other tools such as allan keys, screwdrivers, some pliers etc just to do fine tuning at the track. If my car needs any kind of major work, it gets loaded back on the trailer and I do it at home.

With an enclosed trailer I have the benefit of also having a big air tank inside. No compressor but I fill it up before going to the track and it has more than enough reserve that I could even fill a tire from it if I had to. I also take a small generator to provide voltage to either keep laptops and phones powered up or to run a battery charger for the car if I have to. Car has an alternator so even between rounds, the fan and electric water pump don't drain the battery enough.

Because I run alcohol, I also bring a days worth of fuel in 3-4 jugs.

I never took anything but a screwdriver and distributor wrench, timing light, and basic sockets. Not much. That was back when I was at the drag strip about every other week

Large long-nose vise grip pliers for pulling nails from tires, tire plug kit, cheap tire inflator. Go deluxe, and add a tiny bottle of sudsy soap (and bottle of water) to apply to the tread to locate non-visible punctures

Re: What to keep in toolbox

It's real easy for spending to get out of control if you have a tool box, plus there is never a lack of scumbag thieves wanting to pry their way in there.

I'd say to have basic tool kit in both standard and metric, adapter for going from 3/8 to 1/2, breaker bar, penetrating oil, spare serpentine belt, couple of cans of fix-a-flat, a quality tow strap, a jack stand and bottle jack, flashlight with spare batteries, mechanic's gloves, shop towels and a partridge in a pear treeeee!

You may have a few of these items or not but the older you get you find you've accumulated a bunch of crap! Lol! I hope this helps.

we keep a small toolbox of standard tools you use regularly... Spare set of spark plugs, jug of water for the rad, timing light, jets, carb rebuilt kit, and a grill for when waiting in the pits hehe.

Exactly , I have a little tool kit that is stashed in the rear left glove compartment and a new tested good ECM with some thermal paste is in there , along with the few fuses & other breakdown stuff .
