92 Camaro rs. Shifting problem. Help!

This is my son's car and he starts back to school in just over a week. Anyway. It's a 305 with a automatic. Everything is great in 1st and 2nd gear in OD ,after that it just revs up but no acceleration. Unless of course I drop back down to 2nd gear. Even if I drop it in manually jnto 1st or 2nd same thing. Any suggestions ? Torque converter or tranny issue? I'm really hoping someone has this exact problem that knows what it is before I end up replacing everything. Any help is greatly appreciated .

That's the first thing I checked. It was a little low and I added more fluid .Looked pretty clean and red. Didn't smell anything unusual.

Really the only thing external to the transmission that could cause that kind of shifting troubles is the throttle valve cable . If it's stuck in the wide open throttle position that could cause no 3rd or 4th gear , but beyond that it would be something internal . Like the 3/4 clutch pack (rebuild the transmission at that point) or if you got really lucky maybe a valve body or accumulator problem . The throttle valve itself (in the valve body) has been known to stick in the WOT position if the gas pedal is stomped on hard enough , so if the throttle valve cable checks out the valve itself would be a good next thing to check .

PS , if you ask the mods to move your thread to the "transmissions/drivetrain" area rather than the "tech/engine" area where you posted it , there are lots of transmission savvy folks who would see it there and hopefully offer more in depth suggestions ...
