Alternative quality heads

Putting a new rotating assebly in my 400 motor,, have L31,s on it but stepping up to More of everything.
Brodix IK200,s or Dart SHP,s ,,, i cant find anyone selling the Top Line Pro heads and RHS has little or zero info on their site and zero heads listed,, AFR are way too expensive and Trick flow are out of my Price range.
Looking at 200cc intake no more,, 10.5:1 comp,, 3.44:1 gears and 2500 Stall. Looking at 6000rpm,,MAX street driven pump gas outfit.

Some chinese heads are creaping up to $1200 a set,,, and i cant find any good engine builders using them or giving the thumbs up anyway..... no thanks..

I can Go $1300 no more... Car is going to be sold in few months.

Re: Alternative quality heads

This is not a 383,, and at this point looks like IK200,s or Dart SHP 200cc but open to alternatives.

Re: Alternative quality heads

At this point i will buy the heads first,, and scat has lined me up a good setup with icon pistons based on a 70cc chamber that the IK200 Brodix has,,

if brand XYZ for instance comes up with killer heads and good castings for $1200 or so but only come in 64,66cc chamber i will have to drop the piston dome to keep under 10.5:1 ..
i am looking at a flat tappet around 520 lift,,,,, many engine builders have told me to stay away from the Hyd Roller setup as the lifter are no good and no matter who made them the fall apart.
ITS either Solid or Flat tappet. i dont need a full roller but 110 ,,112, lobe centre is about where i am looking,, 1800 to 6000 rpm cam,,i will get one made as the one size fits all doesnt work for me,, mine is a road car with a 2500 stall and 3.44 diff. not a hot rob but been running 13.0,,, 13.1 et @ 107 all day at the strip.

i believe a 283 doesnt take the same profile cam as a 400sbc.. custom made cams ane no more expensive than warehouse cams here in Australia.

i had them as the 1st choice..i think a basic engine will respond to these no problem...

the Pro maxx stuff is more expensive and i will go the IK200,s

a lot of these high flow number heads are no good under 3500rpm and then pick up fast to 6500,7000...
this is a road car,, i do the shopping in it when i think i am 18 again..my old setup ran 13.0 et all night.
then new setup should get me 12.8et with another 50hp.

all good ,,,,,IK200,s will go on,,,please dont tell me there made in bangladesh and the valves are from the congo....
steve in australia

Re: Alternative quality heads

My Dad ran Brodix heads on a 406 in a 67 Chevelle for years. Street driven with a/c and it put that big sled in 11.3 sec 1/4 trips. He would put it in shows Saturdays then race it at the track on Sundays.

Assault Racing and build them yourself is what I did.

Bare Castings from Amazon $400.00
Competition Products Head Improvement Kit $229.00
2.02/1/60 0.100" longer valves, double springs, valve seals, locks & retainers
Comp Cams Spring Seats $50.00
7/16" screw in studs $45.00
Elgin 5/16" raised pushrod guide plates $20.00

Total $744.00

Compared to those Brodix heads, I was able to add a set of Scorpion 1.7:1 rockers, gaining about 0.040" of lift out of the same cam and a 2-3 degrees duration at 0.050" lift.

Merely lapping the valves and assembling them resulted in the heads flowing as well as the IK200s on the intake and better on the exhaust out of the box. I ran a set for 6 months on a 350 just like that, then wanted more. I built another set and had LLoyd Elliot port them. The 350 is in my Express van that pulls a 6,000 lbs travel trailer. My cam choice had the 350 pulling well by 2,500 rpm and it would spin effortlessly to 6,500 rpm. Part throttle as low as 1,200-1,500 rpm it felt just as strong as the Vortec heads it had previously. I could not tell you what the difference is at WOT down lower in the RPM range. The converter flashed 2,300 rpm with the old Vortec heads/ 1.6 rockers and it stalled 2,500 rpm after the out of the box Assault head / 1.7 rocker swap.

LIFT------INTAKE-----EXHAUST
.200----------135-------103
.300----------183-------131
.400----------225-------150
.500----------244-------164
.600----------241-------175
.700----------241-------177

The double spring kit is probably a bit much for your application. But the good news there is the 2.02/1.60 standard length valve head improvement kit with single springs and standard 3/8" screw in-studs are both cheaper than what I used.

My springs setup at 150# on the seat and 375# open with my 0.578" lift. More than enough to reliably control my hydraulic roller cam to 6,500+ rpm.
