what does this mess do

hey guys,
I have an 87 trans am with a factory carb. my question is what do att the hoses right on top of the engine to, the ones in front of the carb with the plastic valves on them and retainers......... can I remove this or will it effect my options and torque converter. or is it just for emmisions. thanks

It's part of the charcoal canister purge system.

If you remove it, you'd better have a good understanding of how to vent your gas tank and provide atmospheric pressure to the float bowl.

Rather than remove it, consider moving it to an out-of-the-way location.

so if I move it out my car will first run crappy then blow up? man that sucks, how can I move it and to were?

how do these guys with the 383 with a holley make there engine look so simple. I just want my hood to open and a nice clean and simple engine to sit there, also simple so I can fix it. I'll never get it that way with the limited carb knowlege I have, what happens if I just plug the gas tank into the canister, my carb gets messed up?
