1989 camaro rs 305 TBI fuel cap/ tank confusion

Hello everyone. As the title states, recently I have had to replace my fuel tank because there was a crack on the neck where it meets the body of the tank and fuel was leaking on turns and the sending unit was broken only to find out that the previous owner jb welded the sending unit on top of the tank making it useless to me . I went to my neighborhood oreillys and bought a Precision fuel tank part number FT569 and it did not come with a new cap. So I used an Stant fuel cap part number 10822 and found that the cap was too big and would not thread in more than an centimeter before stopping leaving fuel vapor to escape. Since all the stant fuel caps oreilly offered where the same size, I decided to give autozone a try and used Duralast 5794 and encountered the same issue finding that the cap is too big to thread in. I was wondering if anyone else encountered the same issue when replacing the fuel tank and if anyone has a part number for a fuel cap that would fit my Precision fuel tank. Thank you all.

I can't answer directly to your brand of tank, but we have another recent thread sharing experiences. Most aftermarket tanks seem to take a different cap. My Dorman took a Stant 10834. See the thread at the link below. Perhaps one of these will help you.

Reviving this thread, I'm using the same FT659 tank from O'reilly's for my Trans Am. This was super helpful, thanks! I purchased the Duralast Fuel Cap 5795 (which fits a '96 Camry).
