I put together a 350 for my car a few months ago. Wound up getting it into the car, engine runs strong. On driving it I noticed a noise seemingly coming from the valve train. From the get-go I was skeptical that the way these rockers moved around on the valve tip was right, but I didn't really know better. Now that I'm hearing the noise and really seeing how these are moving the valves, there's no way this can be right. Input is appreciated. Heads are AFR 180cc, 3/8 screw in studs with AFR supplied guideplates. Pushrods are Comp 5/16 7.2" length. Rockers are Comp 17002-16 3/8 mount. Rockers were set 3/4 turn past 0 lash.

 

Maybe you have guide plates for 3/8 pushrods?? That's a lot of play. Check to see how much clearance there is between the pushrod and the guideplate.

 

With the pushrod up against the guideplate on one side I have .012" clearance on the other side. The movement is not nearly as extreme on the pushrod side. The rockers seem to move around on the shaft itself.

 

I had the same rockers on a 305 the ticking drove me nuts! I put stock ones back on and noise went away. They have alot of sideplay I was expecting better quality with comp. Years ago I had cheap proforms and had zero noise from them.

 

I have a set of those and wasn't impressed with the appearance or finish work on them. Didn't use them. Went with Scorpion and am very happy with them.

That's nearly an eigth of an inch (0.125). That can't be right. It might be a good idea to contact the supplier to inquire about their tolerances.
