MAF confusion

I have an 85 FB with the 2.8 V6. The health of her MAF is sketchy, but in doing research here, I’m stumped.
My understanding is that the MAF on the 1985’s are completely different than later years. Also that she has a Module, and not a Relay.
I have found new ACDelco’s, but all of them are advertised as fitting 85-89. If the 85 is a stand alone, then how can that fit multiple years? The part number is 25007668 or 213-170.
If this is incorrect for her, then does anyone have the right part number? Or part number for this module-thing? And where would this module be located on the car?
Not too technical please...I’m just a girl trying to make my car happy again!

Re: MAF confusion

The V8s were different that year. No idea about the 6-cyl ones, personally. I know nothing whatsoever about those except that I don't want one.

Don't give up hope completely. Rockauto is your friend. Although instinct tells me if you have consistently found "all 85-89" use the same part # from multiple sources, then it's a good bet that 85-89 are all the same for your car.

Re: MAF confusion

It would appear that the V6 uses an entirely different sensor than the V8. And the parts interchange does specify 85 to 89. So it would seem the 85 is not different in the case of the V6.

Re: MAF confusion

Yes it’s making plenty more sense to me that the V8 1985 MAF system was the stand alone, and that the V6’s would apply to multiple years. When looking at Rockauto, all their V8 sensors available are remans only, also, 85-specific.

I believe the good-intentioned other advice I’ve gotten is from the V8 folks!

Many thanks!

That is great news for you indeed , of course I'm still curious ; if the 1985 V8 MAF does have a separate MAF controller , where on the V8 car is the MAF controller mounted ? Does anybody here know ?

It's funny , I learn something new about the nuances of these cars almost every day , and I never knew there was a 1985 only MAF .....

Re: MAF confusion

Maf controller? Are you referring to the burn off module on top of the 85 tpi ecm ?

Yes perhaps that's it . I searched TGO and found one post discussing how 1985 was different due to having something else besides relay(s?) controlling the MAF and it was referred to as a "MAF Controller" . He said it was a buffer between the MAF and the ECM , and other than that info has been pretty scarce . So , please describe the burn off module , is that what makes the 85 V8 MAF different ?

Re: MAF confusion

I believe the 85 tpi maf is considered digital vs 86-89 analog.
the burn off relay is basically two relays made my Bosch to burn off the hot wire and is located next to the factory ecm.
