Emergancy Help!
Emergancy Help!
HOLY ****, I got stranded on my way home from North Caroline, and had to get towed home. When I start the engine there is one hell of a knock like the thing is gonna fall apart it it don't run longer than 2 mins.
We've changed the oil, and looked at a few things, i can not afford to replace the motor or sell the SOB under value, son of a bitch.
I can't seem to figure out what is causing this problem. Jesus, i don't wanna open up the engine, what should i look for or what can i do!! HELP

*shrug*
I had this happen in a VW Golf Diesel that my brother had some years ago - the car would run but the knock was unbelivable, and the car had absolutely NO power. When taking it apart we found a piston in gravel form and a rod that was nearly U shaped!!
Hope this isn't the case for you!!!

same thing happened to be going down the highway one day, it was crusing fine the out of nowhere KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! louded then hell, i got it home and it still ran but knocked like a SOB, how did your oil look the first time you took it out after it started to knock? if it just a loud tap, tap, tap, thats a rod, but if its a LOUD KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK most likely the mains are wiped out, looks like rebuild time. also what ever you do dont run it! every time you run it your doing more and more damage do the engine, unless you plan on replacing the whole thing then put a brick on the gas pedal and have some fun!

un4given, pull the valve covers and check out the valve operation. Turn over the engine by hand and see if everything is moving the way it should on top. Check everything before freaking out. Even if it is toast, you could probably build a 350 very cheap and swap it out.
Tempest...just driving down the road huh? or was it Flying down the highway with nitrous blastin'
. he he he, at least it went out in glory.

. he he he, at least it went out in glory. try to locate it first, narrow it down to the top or bottom of the engine, also when you first changed the oil after you got it back what color was the oil? if it was gray or had a gray tint thats bearing material, also if you still have the filter, cut it open and look for bearing material. also how is the oil pressure? if its good it may be something like a bent pushrod or trashed lifter, like 85transam says i would also pull the covers and see if everything looks allright.........also going whaling down the highway with the NOS on with a stock engine is also NOT a good idea

Dont be discouraged,
Just for the hell of it call up a junkyard and see what they want for an engine. Any small block will bolt in there. Im sure you can find a running 350, 305, or 400
for next to nothing if you look around. A rebuild can be pretty cheap too. Check prices before you toss your car away for next to nothing (the value of the car is extremely low without a running motor).
If not a new-to-you thirdgen can be had for a few grand...but if you cant afford an engine...
