I-Beam trolly / wench / home made engine puller

Any of you guys ever use something like this along with an electric hoist or some pulley system to make an engine puller? any words of wisdom to pass along?

Re: I-Beam trolly / wench / home made engine puller

I have always kinda wanted one of these in my shop but havent installed one because it needs to have some way to maneuver a bit to pull an engine. Every time I pull/install an engine I inevitably end up needing to reposition the hoist to get the right angle, fitting the engine to the right spot and mating to the transmission. These trolleys dont allow 360* maneuvering to do that so they would need some attachment to make that happen.

Do you need 360 degrees, or just a little twist here and there? I'm just not clear on what needs attached to it to create an engine hoist?

Had one of these in a welding shop. Was super useful. We mounted the I-beam on a huge hinge so we could pick stuff up, then swing it to other places.

We put together a frame and trolly for ours, so it would move forward/backward about 8 feet, and side to side about 2 feet. It was awesome for pulling engines, but, you HAD to remove the hood for access.

what was used as a pulley? I'm not sure how a pulley system works on these?

Thanks for the link - so can one guy pull the weight of an engine with this by pulling on the chain?

Yes, the "control" chain works a series of gears/pullies to work the load side chain. If you look at that link it says there is a 53 lb pull to make it move with maximum weight on the load side. I think they have a worm and wheel so the load can never cause the control side chain to move

I picked one up at a swap meet to use one day. I too plan on some sort of chainfall with a trolley and beam overhead

Thanks for the explanation, now all those specs gibberish make sense. pretty amazing a 53 lb pull can pull a ton. does the pull # get reduced for a lighter load?

Yes, you can spin that chain around pretty fast with no weight on the load side
