89 TPI EGR deleted surging idle

I have a 89 TPI 5.7L IROC I had a bad egr temp switch no replacements etc, I live where we don't have emissions and know about the damage etc. I need help with the vacuum line routing, I still have the plenum off, I cut off the egr diagram after removing it and glued the diaphragm to the egr plate with some JB weld, I want to block off the lines but give off the appearance that it is still there, I need pictures of the vacuum lines and lines that connect into the throttle body please. I've looked at few different diagrams but I get frustrated trying to make sense of them as my canister is on the opposite side and i don't believe the lines were correctly hooked up in the first place. If you could tell me which lines i need to block off would be great too, Thank you in advance, I've spent weeks now trying to find answers to this specific engine and with the delete, I've searched I'm loosing my mind ! Thanks for the help again guys !

Egr vacuum starts under the Throttlebody with ported vacuum.
the line runs under the plenum then next to the distributor to the egr solenoid.
from the solenoid back under the plenum to the egr.

so do I unplug the egr solenoid ? What needs to be connected back to the plenum vs what I need to plug. Ive got a hacked up vacuum system.

IF our want to bypass just put a vacuum cap under the throttle body. If you get a code 32 get a egr delete chip.
put a BB gun bb in the vacuum line to block and leave there if that’s what your asking.

I already installed a new chip, got everything back together today including valve cover gaskets and now my idle is going up and down and running extremely rich to the point the vehicle shuts off

Warm up and unplug the iac see if it still surges. Then check for vacuum leaks. Has the car sat for along time or this is a new problem ?

This is a new problem, I ran the car and drove it into to town filled up on gas and came back then did the mods a few days later. I also had the battery unplugged for 24 hours when I changed out the chip and thank you for helping me,I've been a lurker on this forum since the early 2000s.

Yes I do, I will take pics tomorrow morning of everything. When its running it sounds almost like it has a cam That's too big and smells like your pouring gas from the pump onto yourself its so strong. Ill try the IAC too and check for vacuum leaks.

Had an ah ha moment is like to run by you at 3am, I spent about ten hours out thete yesterday replaced the chip, fpr, both valve cover gaskets, and finished the egr block off with new runner gaskets. I pulled a white wire out of a connector when moving the wire loom to do the valve cover gasket, couldn't fix it was in a double square type connector with tabs pretty small so I went ahead and stripped both ends and wired and taped it directly to each other. White wire is on passenger side near distributor looks like it had been damaged previously and fixed poorly

Re: 89 TPI EGR deleted surging idle

Not sure what white wire you repaired , tach maybe.
pull the fpr vacuum line and look for signs of fuel. Also use carb choke cleaner to look for a vacuum leak. If you pulled the runners could of mistakenly put the lower gaskets on the wrong sides.

Left the runners on during all the repairs. Had the plenum gaskets backwards fixed that and used gascacinch on them, unplugged the IAC and it almost immediately dies, plugged in the egr solenoid car shut itself off twice, will try the ecm chip tonight has been pouring rain all day

Re: 89 TPI EGR deleted surging idle

FPR line clear no fuel, checked all wires again, switched out the ecm chip and it runs better since the egr valve was originally stuck in the open position but throwing a code, have a ticking noise somewhere that I can't track down. Sounds more internal past the cylinder heads, rich smell is gone I just hope its not running lean and detonating.

I wouldn’t worry about running lean within the absence of the egr. It’s commanded on during cruising anyways.

Hey there, if you don't mind to steer me in the right direction w/some suggestions...

where would be the best place to order a custom/upgrade chip for 1988 L98 5.7 TPI that will be having both: AIR/smog & EGR delete. Additionally, AFA the upgrade chip... will also be running true duals (keeping dual O2 sensors live), triple CAT delete, upgrade 24lb LT1 Bosch 3's, adj fuel pressure reg. & Superram intake system with larger 58 TB. (poss hot-cam once all rest is complete)

Appreciate any help or input. Mark

Best bet is to use his site www.tunedperformance.org as you will have to fill out a brief form for what your set up is and changes. Good luck with your chip car sounds like it will be mean.
