New crate engine not running properly
Hi guys.
long story short i have replaced the old 305 tpi in my 92 camaro with a zz6 crate enginge toped off with a first tpi intake and a cutom prom tuned for the new engine via specs i emailed to the guy. I started it but could not get the timeing right even though it idles smoothly the timeing looks like 60 degrees and when i turn the engine off and start it again it needs adjustment to idle smooth again. So i got a new exaust put on as the old one leaked and asked the mechanic to have a look. He had the same issues and said it seams to run well when cold starded but gets rough when it gets hot and after 3 min of idleing the headers are glowing so maybe running lean.
Any help would be appreciated as im so close to the finish line with this car

Re: New crate engine not running properly
E-tuning may not be appropriate for that combo. But you need to properly resolve the timing question before you can know.
60 degrees seems highly unlikely (and have a smooth idle anyway). Probably wouldn't run. Double check your timing marks and your timing light setup.... and that you are triggering off cylinder #1 (driver's side front).
Glowing headers is either lean or timing is heavily retarded.... you sure you are on the correct side of the timing scale?

Re: New crate engine not running properly
Thanks for the reply
I am stumped buy the timeing issue, im not a qualified mechanic so i asked the mechanic doing my exaust to have a look and he thought maybe a dyno tune would solve the problem as he set the distributer to TDC and got the same issue i had. Would you recomend getting it dyno tuned to see if that helps?

Yes. If it's something mechanical then very likely the tuner will be able to troubleshoot it before or on the dyno. That happens a lot and we do a LOT of troubleshooting on my dyno.

Re: New crate engine not running properly
I dont think he had it disconnected when he was setting the timeing. I mentioned it to him though so he might try to set the timeing with it disconected.? Do you think it could be the idle air control? I dont think it has been reset since moving it from the original intake to the new intake

Re: New crate engine not running properly
Once i get it back ill try and set the timeing properly with the esc switch disconnected. Hopefully that works. All the mechanics in my area seem to work on modern cars and i seem to have to mention how to do things. Even finding someone to get it dyno tuned is a problem.
