Steering Column help...

I believe the pushrod from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch broke or got disconnected somehow. I would be able to see if I could move or slide this last piece I'm pointing at in the picture. How in the hell do you loosen this piece so I move it out of the way and see what I'm dealing with?

Thanks,

Re: Steering Column help...

The upper bowl internal support needs to be removed. There are four Torx head cap screws holding it in place.

If it is onlt the linkage rod from the sector (die cast piece) to the ignition switch (mounted at the lower end of the outer column jacket tube) I believe that can be removed by manipulating that around any internal obstructions.

Upper bowl internal support? Sorry I don't know what part you are referring to or where those Torx screws are. This is to remove the part I'm pointing to?

Thanks

http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...ck_Rebuild.pdf

This is by far the best GM steering column tutorial I have ever found. I've used it to rebuild two of our third gen columns and the info is spot on.

And now the the usual disclaimer; Not my webpage, I have no affiliation with either the webpage nor the tutorial's author, I'm just someone whose used the data successfully

Re: Steering Column help...

Unfortunately, that part is the first things that is assembled on the steering column tube when it's built up. I changed mine and basically the column needed to come apart down to the tube to change it.

I took my colum out to do this. Get a copy of the correct GM Service manual. The instructions for disassembly/assembly and the parts blow up is very good... and the video above.

Also a very hard part to find. I was lucky to find a NOS part on ebay that needed to be painted. Scuffed with used/old red scotch brite - clean well with Iso alcohol - plastic adhesion promoter - dupli-color Low Gloss Black engine enamel DE1634- let it sit for days to fully cure.

Turned out factory perfect.

Luckily I don't need to remove it at this point I just need to move it down the column so I can access where the push rod had gotten disconnected.
According to that tutorial it sounds like it just slides into place so I might be able to just push it down toward the bottom of the column and it pop loose?

Re: Steering Column help...

Anyone know what size the bolt is that threads into those pivot pins?

Re: Steering Column help...

Try an 8-32. My recollection is that size. My notes verify that.
