How to remove valve springs
Ok, this may seem dumb of me but I dont know how to get the old ones off. Its not in my manual (cant find it anyway). I rented a valvespring compressor from national auto ( I was under the impression that was what I needed). But I can't figure it out lol. The heads are off the car. Thanks. or maybe you have a website that I could read (preferably with pics)

If you have the valve spring compressor (foot long bar metal bar) you will need to put it on the rocker stud, use a rocker bolt to lock it in place then push down until the keepers fall out. The other way is to get a 11/16th or 5/8th socket put it on top of the spring and pop it a couple of times with a hammer but you still need the compressor to but the keepers back in.

if the head is off the engine i have a piece of 1" pipe about 5" long with a cap screwed on it and the other end machined . i just set it over the valve on the retaner and smack it with a BFH, 1 or 2 times and valve springs and keepers are off.
I have the "In engine" type of valve spring compressor, its basically two hooks that grab the bottom of the springs and you screw downards and it pulls both ends of the springs together
cost me $30, works great, and wont be the last time you use it.
Good luck

Ok, thanks guys I figured it out after looking in my other manual. Why the hell does haynes have it but chiltons doesnt. I guess thats why I got both. Turns out I was holding the damn thing upside down.
compressor worked great and it was free for the day
National auto is cool about that stuff. now on to porting the damn things

Is there some special technique for putting the new ones on? I got them all on ok but I noticed when I was done that the little o-rings had been pushed out of their groove in the valve stem by the retainer when I compressed it. Shouldn't they be up right under the retainer? Should I just use a paper clip to slide them back up? Thank you guys.
