Are 3.1 and 2.8 distributors different?

I've been chasing a rough running issue that has slowly evolved into a no start. While looking around I noticed that my 2.8 MPFI has what looks to be a 3.1 distributor. Instead of having the arms coming up and around the pickup coil, it has the star gear looking thing. Would that matter or affect my running condition?

If you were to check an on line source like "Rock Auto", you would find that the part numbers for the 2.8 and 3.1 distributors are the same. With that said, there were two different types of pickup assemblies, either should work fine provided whichever type you have is actually good .

A no start should be pretty easy to diagnose, your either missing fuel, spark, or compression/airflow through the engine. Figure out which of the three isn't right and you'll have your problem solved. A fuel pressure gauge and a spark gap tester should be where your at next.....

I plan on testing all the electrical components tomorrow. I made this post on the V6 board but that part of the forum seems to not get a lot of traffic. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/7...-no-power.html

I'll probably just go ahead and change the plugs, I've checked them and they are a little oily on the threads but look decent. Fuel pump primes nice and loud, but I haven't checked pressure yet. I've heard that's a bit of a hassle. I tried messing with timing and only made it worse.

As long as you have access the the scrader valve.. .which i THINK you do easily, you just ecrew on a pressure gauge and turn the key
