Need Help Identifying Part

Hi guys this car probably needs more work than most people would consider doing to this rust bucket. However the car has sentimental value to me as it was a gift from my father who has recently passed. I'm going through the process of restoring her and I have a lot to look at without knowing a whole lot about cars. I basically just need help determining what this broken rusted through part is so I can get to replacing it, so long as it is that simple. I believe it is some sort of connecting fitment piece, and I'd assume air/fuel/liquid goes through it, but thats about all I could infer. Is it just a fitting that I can replace or is that going to be a bigger job than I anticipate?

ignore the spilt engine oil, whoops

Rockauto calls it an air injection pipe. Use flare nut wrenches on the tube nuts, I would also recommend penetrating oil and heat.

You'll need that check valve too. That's the piece that the rubber hose attaches to. It unscrews from the pipe, or at least, would unscrew, if the pipe was still intact and somebody hadn't put that exhaust dope stuff all over everything.

The tubes, check valve, rubber hose is all part of the emission air injection system (AIR) and is connected to the smog pump. The purpose of it is to blow air into the exhaust system from the smog pump when the engine is still cold to reduce emissions. Once the engine is warmed up to operating temperature, this air injection system does nothing.

Does the engine still have a smog pump?

Yes I do believe it does, not sure if I will keep it forever as I have seen some people delete it, however I still don't know if that is something I want to do. If it did not have a smog pump would the air injection system be redundant?

I appreciate the information, I figured that piece was really ****ed up but I never would've figured somebody put that stuff on it. Is it some spray or goop to help reduce leaks or something to that effect?

Hi Jacob, before you consider deleting any of that car's emission controls, you'd best make certain of what New Jersey checks for during your annual vehicle inspection. You don't want to be deleting things that your State requires to be present to pass the inspection, I know some States are more strict than others, and I have no idea what NJ requires......

Re: Need Help Identifying Part

The smog pump IS part of the AIR system. AIR stands for Air Injection Reactor... kinda hard to have Air Injection with no pump.

Obviously is came with one. If it's not there now, you're in some other territory.

Definitely check your state regs before hacking on anything any further, as Orange says. It'd be a damn shame to do whatever and then discover you couldn't drive the car without attracting law enforcement "customer service".

Based on what a friend told me, and google "The following vehicles are exempt from inspection requirements (N.J.A.C. 13:20-7.2):
  • Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 1995 & older with a GVWR 8,500 pounds or less."
Either way I probably won't get rid of it, especially if it makes my cars emissions smell worse.

Re: Need Help Identifying Part

If you are going to remove it all, there's a good chance you won't be able to remove the tubes from the exhaust manifold.

Cut the tubes off about 1.5-2.0 inches long. Bend the ends over and crimp them off. That will be enough to prevent exhaust leaks.
