PCV Routing Question (305 SBC)

Good morning all,

My 1983 Trans Am was initially outfitted with a Crossfire Injection system before being changed to a carbureted setup. Please pardon my ignorance; a friend assisted me in switching the car's fuel injection system to a carburetor and getting it started and have since lost contact since I moved away. It's not quite accurate, as the accompanying photographs show. (Pic #2 shows the intake being routed to itself, for example with no explanation as to "why") I wanted to know how to install the PCV system correctly. My research on Youtube University has led me to learn more about the PCV system than the real "How to put it back together" that I'm attempting to accomplish. I know that the PCV is essentially necessary, but I've been putting it off for a while on my car. (It's a project I'm learning on)

1: Does the PCV Valve go on the Driver or Passenger side?
2: Does that PCV line get run to the Intake or under the Air Cleaner?
3: Would I be able to use a Breather on the opposite side of the PCV valve, or do I need to hook it up to the Intake/Air Cleaner?
4: If #3 requires to be run to one of those locations, what part would I use to facilitate that? (I assume you can't use 2 PCV valves for the angle)

Re: PCV Routing Question (305 SBC)

Ideally the valve is on the drivers side and has a vacuum source from the base of the carb. It's usually 3/8(ish) line. You can run the line how ever you want but keep it free of any potential damage. A push in breather on the pass side is fine. You can plumb it to the intake but it's probably not trouble than it's worth.

have you gotten the car running yet?

Thank you for your reply! The car runs. Although, not the best due to the carb being too big for the stock engine. (It was free, not going to look a gift horse in the mouth when I needed the car to run at the time)

Re: PCV Routing Question (305 SBC)

PCV should be in the driver's side valve cover. Factory, it was at the front. There's a Frod oil fill cap from the 70s you can get that should fit the hole in the VCs you have, butt it has the PCV grommet in the middle. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sdk-c8az-6766-a for example. It has like wire wool in it as an oil separator.

Makeup air should come into the pass side VC. You can use another of the same oil fill cap, stick a hose barb in it instead of the PCV valve, and run a short hose to the air cleaner. I seem to recall the Edelbrock made a little fitting that would bolt up under there, so that it would get clean filtered air that's been through the air cleaner element, butt any vapors that come up that way get drawn into the engine, thereby dramatically reducing that "old truck" smell that permeates cars with "breathers".

Re: PCV Routing Question (305 SBC)

Did you also swap to a vacuum advance distributor?

And if that intake manifold is an Edelbrock Torker II single plane, then this is completely wrong if your engine is stock or nearly so.

Re: PCV Routing Question (305 SBC)

Yes, the the car was swapped as good as it could be at the time.

And I'm aware that the Intake is not the proper one after looking it up (it is an Edelbrock Torker II). I'm working on getting a new one. I ordered an Edelbrock AVS2 Series Carburetor 1901 and waiting for a response from Edelbrock for what intake should be paired with it (or if the one I have will work).

Since I'm not interested in speed, I plan on keeping it with it's sad 305 until the engine bites the dust. This is the car I've been learning on. I take things as they come. I do have a 350 SBC I acquired while helping another friend do his engine swap. Eventually it will make it's way into my T/A.
