Electronic timing advance bad??

'82 LG4 Firebird, replaced entire distributor assembly including ICM from the shaft to the cap. ECM shows no codes, car starts, idles like crap, refuses any throttle and dies. With the timing bypass wire disconnected it idles fine but starts loping hard and refusing to go above 1k rpm under throttle. No idea what could be causing it since all ECM wires are fine and it's getting power to the distributor

Re: Electronic timing advance bad??

Your post in this thread is probably only a tiny part of your problem, and maybe not even actually related. Your other thread you talk about replacing the carb, ECM, and all kinds of sensors. You said it runs worse each new component you add, so you might want to tell people the whole story if you want someone to take the time to help you diagnose it over the internet.

Sounds like you are just firing the parts cannon repeatedly. You can keep doing that and keep getting the same result, or take my advice in your other thread and start a systematic approach to solving the problem(s).

Re: Electronic timing advance bad??

I'll have to take some time to really tear into it, but space is limited and I'm not a fan of laying on a hot driveway all day so it'll be a bit

Re: Electronic timing advance bad??

My experience with CCC Lg 4s is that even with the ECM missing they will still run well enough to drive-rich, lumpy idle and cloud of black smoke behind if throttle stomped. You need to make sure cat(if still there) is not plugged, there is no major vacume leak.and could run compression test to eliminate engine mechanical problems such as stuck valve, thrown pushrod etc. It is probably a carb problem causing the trouble.

Cat isn't plugged up, will check for vacuum leaks and other stuff tomorrow. The tach starts doing funky stuff when it starts cutting and missing at 1k rpm so I'll also look at electrical stuff and backtrack things we've fixed/replaced

I'd doubt it since the distributor as a whole unit is brand new.. but we've had a carb and a distributor base be bad right out the box before, so who knows

Re: Electronic timing advance bad??

Car gave me two codes, those being 42 and 55. I understand 42 to be an EST or timing bypass issue, so at least we narrowed that down. But I'm not sure about 55

Welp, turns out the distributor was faulty because we replaced it and now it revs perfectly fine, problem solved
