Is there a difference between years?

Is there a difference between a 1979, a 1984 and a 1988 SBC 305? Is there some kind of internal difference between them that would force me to get specific parts in order to rebuild my motor?

And I know, it'll be better to swap in a 350 but that's not an option at the moment, I don't have the ability to rebuild my 700r4 to handle more power or get a new transmission instead.

Re: Is there a difference between years?

Short answer:
79 - oil dipstick on driver's side, 2-piece rear main seal
84 - oil dipstick on passenger's side, 2-piece rear main seal
88 - one-piece rear main seal, so different crankshaft

There are other small external differences.

Re: Is there a difference between years?

'88 has roller cam and center-bolt rocker covers.
If I'm not mistaken, the '79 has smaller intake valves than the '84 & '88...
