CRANK PULLEY NEED ADVICE

Building an engine from a 98 silverado to put into the Camaro. Going with a F body serp setup. I have AC delete pulley, factory replacement camaro WP, factory replacement camaro PS pump, factory Camaro alternator, factory Camaro tensioner. Factory 2 accessory camaro brackets.
From what I'm reading i should use pulley 10055879 but holy cow they are expensive. I put the truck pulley on and looks like everything lines up properly it's just larger diameter. (Almost 8 inches). Would this cause any issues other than maybe having to use a longer belt?

Re: CRANK PULLEY NEED ADVISE

What engine is this? L31 traditional small block Chevy, or LM7 which is a LS type motor?

If this is the L31 SBC, then the consequence of using a larger pulley is, everything else will turn faster. This will make all of it "work better" at low speeds, butt the overdrive may be too much at higher RPMs.

It's an L31 block. Can you elaborate on this statement a bit more?
"the overdrive may be too much at higher RPMs."

In laymans terms lol

Thanks!

big thing makes little things go faster in circles.

Because it was a shell. Nothing came with the car.

Zackly.

If you, let's say, double the crank pulley diameter, then its circumference moves twice as fast around the edge, which makes the belt move twice as fast, which then spins everything else twice as fast. Now your alternator is doing 10000 RPM just cruising down the highway instead of 5000 or whatever, let alone however fast it goes at higher engine RPMs. I destroyed a perfect 69 Chevelle SS hood once by exploding an alternator fan from excessive RPM, so I've watched it happen with my own eyes as a fan fragment blew a hole through the hood and flew up over the roof of the car.

How about, just go to the junkyard and get a pulley off of some old car. Practically ANY late 80s / early 90s SBC in a car (not truck) w serpentine setup will have what you need. For that matter even some other truck might, just take your tape measure with you and get a smaller one. Don't outsmart yourself using part #s as your weapon.

Re: CRANK PULLEY NEED ADVICE

I'm baffled too. The stock pulley is crazy expensive. So basically the difference is just that it's oversized is what I'm gathering. With my donated system, I was given an undersized pulley for the crank. But I'm not wanting to run an undersized since racing has left my enthusiasm. Hmm

Re: CRANK PULLEY NEED ADVICE

I ended up finding a used PN 10055879 on ebay. Everywhere I read and who I've talked to says that's the factory pulley. I've got it on with every other factory pulley and seems to be working out.
