What is this green wire for?

I was pulling off smog stuff and accidentally tore this loose. It came from somewhere underneath the number 2 spark plug (front driver side)

Re: What is this green wire for?

Coolant temp sensor. Its mounted in the head between the two plugs.

Re: What is this green wire for?

There is a coolant temperature switch in the head on some models/years.

EDIT: Firechicken82 beat me to it.

There is also a dark green wire to a high pressure cutout switch in the A/C compressor circuit, but that is usually in the receiver on the opposite corner of the engine bay.

Re: What is this green wire for?

Not "coolant temp sensor", exactly. Since your car is an export model (Canada?) it doesn't have a CTS at all.

That's for the temp gauge sending unit, which is between the #1 & #3 plugs.

Good eye! No MC solenoid or TPS on the carb, no throttle kicker, and no electric fan, so that eliminates the redundant fan temperature "switch" found on some early ThirdGens with federal emissions equipment. That doesn't leave much but the sender for the gauge, or the special separate ground for the rear compartment temporal flux capacitor...

Thanks for the responses. This was originally purchased in Brevard NC. It had factory AC and a factory carburetor. I removed the original Rochester and replaced it with the one you see in the picture. Its only connections are vacuum to distributor and PCV. Only electrical connection is the choke. Don’t know if this helps you experts figure out that green wire! Sounds like maybe I should try to reattach it?

Re: What is this green wire for?

None of that matters. It's still for the temp gauge sending unit.

Re: What is this green wire for?

And just as a friendly FYI -

Spark plug #s for V8 are (front to rear) ... Dr side 1, 3, 5 7 & pass side 2, 4, 6, 8

So your temp sender is in head between #1 & #3

If that's the temp gauge sending unit wire as seems possible like in this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...connector.html, and you want the gauge to work, then yes you should. Make sure it's not the throttle kicker wire, as also detailed in that thread.
