Removing AC
Ok, I have the compressor (sp?) out and everything except for the black casing. Can I remove this and still keep the heater? I am trying to get as much stuff out of the engine as possible. Also will the defroster still work??
I'm wondering the same thing. Would make a perfect spot for MSD ignition box
... thinking about going to a junkyard, and taking that piece off a non-ac car, to retain use of the heater/defroster. I think the heater core is on the other side of the box though, with the firewall sandwhiched between (so take the box off, and don't be surprised if the heater core falls down in the passenger compartment.) Not 100% sure though, maybe someone can answer?

I took my ac out a while ago so heres the deal.
You can't just tear that box out. You have to cut it. The ac condenser is inside the right part by the canister. Just tear the right part of the box out and all the ac crap will come out. The fan is just to the left so you will have to make a new enclosed wall for the fan to blow into the heater core. The core is just inside the firewall and will not fall out. My defroster is the only thing that still works. But that is probably a vac leak. Good luck

... Thanks for the ideas, 86TpiTransAm. I was also considering mounting it somehow on the shock tower (I'd like to keep the washer fluid... car is an everyday driver

still wondering...can i remove that black case and still retain the defroster and heater???

No. If you remove the whole black peice the blower fan will just blow into the engine compartment and not into the core.

Your best bet would be to go your nearest G.M. parts counter and see if they offer a heater case for a car without A.C.. The car in the picture above looks clean and probably is a factory piece. Another option would be to troll the bone-yards for a car with out A.C. and ****** some parts off of it.

Good luck finding a non-AC car. I have only seen a couple of them. Your best bet is V-6 cars. Most every V-8 had AC. I would just say to the hell with the Junkyards and go straight to my favorite Chevy or Pontiac dealer and ask for a non AC fan housing. That is just my .02$.
By the way i drove my car with a big hole in the Firewall there for a while and it is not bad in good weather, but when it starts raining i suggest keeping paper towels handy.

Guys would you believe that the non-a/c heater box in the photo was made by reworking the stock a/c unit? Look close, it's not the factory non-a/c box which by the way from what I understand is no longer available. That is one reason that I reworked my stock unit after planning an in car head change and seeing how much in the way the a/c box was.(I had already taken the rest of the a/c out)
