Sounds like youve got probs. First, make sure the timing connector is disconnected(made that mistake once myself) when you time it. The blue smoke is probably from oil consumption. THis would cause the lousy idle b/c the oil fouls the plugs
I purchased the car as a project a few weeks ago and yes, the car has issues. Generally, it only gives me blue puffs at start up. The car is at 6* now, and the label says to tune to "0", but when tuned to the label it smokes alot. I also disconnected the computer timing control.
Is it more important to adjust timing so that the engine runs smoothly or just follow the label then let the ECM change what it has to?????
I pulled the driver's side plugs, all were fine except for #1, I believe this is where my valve guide seals have gone south. The gap was bridged by light brown deposits....a true spark plug stalagtite....just awful. I'll be pulling the covers soon.
Incidently, how in the world do you access the pass side plugs?

Hmmm... interesting that it smokes at the base timing... Check to make sure the computer advances the timing by reving the engine w/ a timing lite connected... If it doesnt, it could be a prob w/ teh electronic advance (i think).
As for the plugs... you'll hafta get creative. The rear most plugs are more easily accessed by lifting the car and going in from underneath. It can take anywhere from 25 min. to a couple of hours depending on how many times youve done it.

The computer is advancing the timing as needed. Thanks for the spark plug tip.
I read your statement on another post,...to follow the label when adjusting the timing. Gives me an idea of the overall health of the engine.
Thanks

It's a Miracle
I adjusted the timing back to 0 as per the label, Runs great, the encrusted spark plug was the #1 cylinder, new plugs and all is well.
Still need to get the covers off to survey the damage.
There is a dangling wire with a crispy connector hanging by the #1 cylinder, could it be the temp gauge? 02 sensor is hooked up.
Thanks,
Steve

Yep, the crispy wire is more'n likely for the in dash temp gauge. (provided you have the gauge, otherwise, it is just a switch for the idiot lite.)

Thanks
Thanks for the information, its been invaluable.
Does anyone know what a code 53 would be in my car? My manual does not reference it under TBI, but does for TPI and MPFI.
