How fast?

I was just wondering if anybody knows how fast a Mazda Rx-7 idles and its red line. I'm talking about the rotary Wankel engine, with/without turbos.

Rx-7s are designed for Rotary engines, like a Z28 is for a small block. For one a Rx-7 is much lighter than a Z28, and the rotary engine has little torque compared to the V8 you have in there. The transmission is geared for high revs.

You would have to 'reinvent the wheel' as it were, or at least your Camaro. And you would have a car that would perform worse than if you would have invested it in your V8.

The Miller Cycle engine is a better (and cooler) idea!

Your best bet would be to PM rx7speed or IM him rx87speed. I would think their redline is around 7k. But those motors are known to have a short life if I remember correctly.

hehe I'm here

ok as far as putting a wankel in your car....forget it.

yeah you can do it but it would not be the greatest thing unless you went with a peripheral port on the motor but from what I understand that would not put up any power till about 3000 rpms and it would not have a lot of power before that though you can rev it till about 10-12k rpms and need to do a lot of stuff to your car to handle that high of a rpm range

the only other way would be to put a turbo on there
since these motors are so small you shouldn't have too hard of a time to put a turbo in there
thought you would still need to do a lot of work to get a rotary in there

now if yo uare serious about the idea I would go for a 20b
they put out prolly just as much torque as your V8's do and have a much wider powerband. though cost would be a big thing there since they are imported from japan

I have hit 9k or so I am guessing on mine
stock redline is 7k and tach only hits 8k but I know when I let off the gas it took amoment or two for the tach to start reading anything other then 8k

I shift most the time at 7600 though cause after that I will have a loss of power b/c of stock port size

the idle should be at 750 rpms just like a normal car

as far as engine life most of them are false, or come b/c these cars are a little touchy on how you take care of them. if you take care of them they will last just as long if not longer then a piston motor. you dont take care of them though then they last a lot shorter ofa time then a piston motor

and mark it's rxspeed87 for aim

they are a cool motor though
if you want my write up on them
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...&highlight=rx7
and there is another one in the ontario board

if you need more just ask away
