I figure they are both related, probally something wrong with the ignition system. Where should I start?

What color smoke? If the car is fuel injected it could be a leaking injector. My car would puff out white smoke and be hard to start.

the color is gray and there is a smell of gas, so i am assuming that its not getting burned all the way.
I had to replace the wires with MAG PLUS 7mm wires and this helped out a lot, but not completly. My old wire fell a part when i went to check my plugs

Has your car sat up for awhile?? Mine sat for three years and it turns out that there was something wrong with my valve guides...but after driving it a few 1000 miles all the smoking stopped. Could also be bad plugs??
