Why do my sparkplugs look like this ?

what causes sparkplug insulaters to have a black smoke look on them .You know how when a house or something burns , you see the black smoke marks on white wood or something , but its not real dark , thats how my insulaters look on my plugs , but you can still see there white , they are just smoky looking .Thanx for your help !

they should generally be brown with a hint of white. if there is a little black, its ok... but if there is NO BROWN then there is somthing wrong. White = Lean Black = Rich Brown = Stoich.
you want Stoich. 13.7:1 i think...

Guys, he's not talking about reading the plugs for rich/lean condition.

He's talking about where the rubber sparkplug boot come in contact with the porcelain insulatutor on the plug...ya know, where the number/manufacturer is.

That's funny that you've never seen it before, I've never replaced plugs in an HEI'ed vehicle that it wasn't there.
It's normal. What's happening is a small amount ofthe spark being sent to the plug, is finding another path of least resistance.

I suppose new wires and a spotless dust free/oil free area could help, but it's nothing to worry about.
