Same exact thing happens to my 00 TA. Intermittant problems don't seem to get fixed under warranty cause "they can't find anything wrong".
Don't know what causes it yet. I'm waiting for it to happen again so I can check things out when it's in the up position.

My 92 does the same thing, untill one day its just seemed to let go. It turned out to be it threw one of the cables off the bracked above the drive shaft...

Hehe, mine does the same thing sometimes. You expect to feel resistance but then WHAM it just flies right up and you practically pull a muscle. Dunno why it does it though...

Happenned on my GTA also. Have a '91. Anyway, when it happenned to me, it didn't work again, and it turned out to be that the parking brake cable got tangled on one of the brackets. Really hope it doesn't happen in an emergency situation.

Dunno if the setup is the same in a thirdgen, but in my vette I had the same problem, I eventually tracked it down to a pulley the cable ran through under the car. The cable was slipping off of it, causing this problem.
