Indexing Plugs
I have put in new regular AC Delco Plugs in my 406 (that's what was in there originally) about 3 months ago. I will be installing an MSD 6A ignition today with the MSD Blaster 2 coil, so i figured this is a good time to index my plugs. I have never done this before, so if you guys could suggest to me how much i should index them and how to go about doing it. (what will i need to get from an autostore? (a plug indexer obviously but does quality matter?) here are my engine specs:
- 406 CI
- Flat-top Hyperutechtic pistons 8.5 to 1
- Head milled .020, Block .010
- 3 angle valve job
- Stainless valve
- .030 pistons
- X rods, ARP bolts
- crank turned .010 .010
- engine line bored
- R.V. cam (3 steps over stock)
- Rhode lifter
- Final Compressions 9.6 to 1
- 63cc hoods
- True Roller Timing Chain

Indexing is very simple but time consuming.
You need a permenant marker and an assortment of shims that match the plugs (ie, the ones for AC Delco plugs)... I haven't looked but I assume you can buy them from Autozone?
Hold the plug horizontal and draw a line on the ceramic portion of the plug where the OPEN side of the electrode is. Then just screw them into the head adding a shim untill the line faces towards the piston. The spark will now be facing the direction of the explosion.
