air cleaner fitting

Ok, i have an 84 T/A. I bought that cheap Edelbrock air cleaner, the 14"x3" one. It says i need to buy this spacer to put it on. I already figured that if i need this spacer, i'm going to have to go from the 3" to a 2 1/4". My question is, what and why do i need this spacer. I have the stock power bulge hood.
Thanks

If i'm not mistaken, you need the spacer to clear the distributor

that spacer is to clear the connection for the electronic choke. i had to do the same. i use a 3/4 inch spacer. this probably will not fit under the stock hood. i had no problem because i have a cowl induction hood.

The spacer is is a waste! When you space a drop base air cleaner like your edebrock you end up with the same height as a non drop base (flat lid) aircleaner setup that flows alot more air. The NON DB will clear your choke with no problems.
