Accel Super Coil

Ok....

I have heard that the Accel Super Coil that fits on top of your distributor cap is known for melting the cap...is this truly the case? Has anyone experienced this happening?? I have an opportunity to purchase one, but I am hesitant if this is the case...I dont need more problems...especially my cap melting....opinions? Suggestions?

I have never heard that one before. I ran one for a couple of
years and never had a problem.

Accell used to make a cap that had a coil wire lead in the center
for using a coil mounted on the firewall. I had one a long long
time ago, (20 years ago) something like that may ease your mind.

Check out the Accell web site or hit a local parts store, they
should be able to get you something.

I've never had an Accel coil melt my cap either, and that goes the same for the MSD in-cap coil also. I used both stock caps, and Accel caps. Currently running a Accel cap with MSD HO Coil , Accel 300+ race wires, and MSD 6AL.

It sounds like those guys with melted cap must of had some sort of resistance bottle neck, like cheap 7mm wires or something ?

Well, ordering something for myself wont answer the question of if it will melt the cap or not...but it seems like everyone one is saying no....i have Xact brand wires on the car now....8mm....(OE replacements).....but if everyone's experience has been good with them, then i'll go for it...anyone see any performance gains from it? or any benefits???

The stock HEI coil runs out of juice at about 5000rpm.
The Accell will not.

I had a problem with the stock coil about 5 years ago, anything above 5000 rpms it would cut out. Put the Accel piece in, not a problem since. Theres a testimonial for ya.

There are three options for Accel HEI coils. There is a small coil that goes under the stock cover, the big, round grey coil that replaces the top cover (Supercoil) and a replacement cap that lets you use a 'conventional' external coil

There are a couple other in-cap coils from a number of mfgrs.....

Mallory also makes a 'big' style HEI coil

MSD, Jacobs and Proform make a remote coil adapter.

I have the big round Accel Supercoil, have had it for 3 years now. It made a small but noticible difference, especially with 4 people in the car.

It's a good cheap, quick mod you will be able to feel the difference.

A performance coil will normally give you a little more spark to open the gap up on your plugs and will have enough energy in the coil to provide spark for higher rpm operation.

are there any negatives to using the super coil? I have one on my IROC and found that the plugs wore out really quickly last time 'round/ The electrodes seem to wear real quick. Anyone else notice this?

Your spark plugs can wear faster due to the extra voltage going to them.
