went for a short road trip and almost did not make it back

It don't look like i will make the dynojet tomorrow.

The plan was take a loop around the city and make sure everything worked ok. Constant speed of about 65 (2500 rpm). About 15 miles into the trip, the thing seemed to run out of gas for a sec. A few blips of the throttle and normal running. Take the turn for the second part of the leg and throttle response seems good. Ten or so miles at down this road at right about 2250-2400 rpm. No noticeable probs. But, after I slow down and stop to make the turn on the last leg, throttle response seems real slow.. sour..

Will barely gather speed. Once you get to about 65 it seems ok.. sluggish (like a cyl or two is off). Then the last 10 or 15miles, it all goes bad...

Come to a slight hill, it can barely make it up.. additional gass just makes it sound more sour. (temp is actually about 5 degrees cooler than it had been). I let off the gas and it dies..I coast for a bit and ease out the clutch and it only barely runs. Coast to a stop and check to make sure the carb has got gas. Get back in and it cranks right up.

But, will barely run at 2500 in 4th gear (with 4.10s thats slow). I limp home and it stays about the same.

Pull the plugs and number 4 and 3 look like they are misfiring. Dark (but not wet like a headgasket). All other cyls are bone whte (lean from the long cruise but ok). I run a compression tst on cyl 4, 210lbs. Then #3, 225lbs.

Just to be sure, I check some of the others. #1. is 250!!.. #8 is like 260!!. I think the gauge might be off. One cyl that looked pefect read 200.. (#6).

The plug wires on #4 and #3 were kind of loose ... maybe they had just come off on the road trip. Going to put new plugs in and see how it runs.
No visible probs on passengide side valve train. Going to chk drivers in morning.

No water out of the tail pipe or in the oil.

Temp was right at 185-190 the whole time. (well until about the last 2 blocks from home when both fans stopped working.). Temp slowly climbed over 210. I shut it off at 215 or so. And found the problem with the fans.

If things keep up yall will have a chance to get a lot of parts real cheap pretty soon.

Cheap parts..*** forbid!

I'd definitely run the compression test again. Is this a new build?

i guess that depends on how u look at it

the motor has been running since Oct. But only has about 21hours on it (I have an hour meter)

And, up to recently had appeared to hav good durability. (no smoke,, made all the right sounds at idle and otherwise).

JCB,

That compression should be good enough to at least make power. I'd be looking at the ignition and fuel systems, but if you were running lean I would have expected more heating and possibly soem backfiring/popping in the intake.

Wires, anyone?

On an engine I built about 10 years ago I had a similar thing fu*kn with me. The thing would start great and take off down the road and then start to loose power without any hope of starting to run any better. After a few times of this I was pokin around and guess what?
The dist was loose.

It was just loose enough that it would start turning after running under load and after being shut off the wires would pull it back into a better running position. LOL I only told one person until now..I tightened the dist up and it ran great from then on.

Signed..."I should have known better"

well,, it seems to be healthy again

the wires on the cyls that appeared dead had burned on the headers. It actually burned through the fiberglass slip on heat sheld. (supercomps and taylor 409s just don't fit well) replaced them with some old spares and it sounds like always.

i think i can get a trailer for the next dynojet run.

Sounds a bit like rockers have backed off...

I hope you get it worked out, I'd like to hear what it does on the dyno.

i can't seem to get one rocker to shutup

but i am working on it..

ONe of the guys (who is probably my main competiton) ran his 80Z (with a 400 close to my combination) on the dyno saturday. He put his together in the last 2 months and blowby was soo bad that it blew the valve cover breather across the shop.

It made 350 at the tires.
