Other than timming what (sensors) would cause the car to run too rich??

 

What year car? If its a MAF car, than the MAF sensor could do it. More likely would be the oxygen sensor. Possibly even a bad MAT sensor or coolant temp. sensor.

 

It a 85 with tpi. Where is the coolant sensor located?

 

When you have troubles like that it is best to learn how to pull the trouble codes. You can borrow an Auto X-Ray or get a free trouble code key at Autozone. Most times you will be able to zero in on some problems and not nickel and dime yourself to death.

A code 15 would indicate a bad coolant temp sensor which would definitely give you a too rich mixture, as well as prevent TCC, and going into closed loop which translated means your gas mileage just went out the window.

The CTS is on the front, top of the manifold and takes about 15 minutes to change and cost about 10 or 12 bucks.

 

I am not sure which sensor is my coolant sensor. There are two sensors next to eachother on the manafold. I know that one is the coolant sensor. The one on the passenger side is larger and has two wires. It has a soft rubber connecetor. The one towards the driversside is smaller and has a plastic connector.

Which is the coolant temp sensor?
What does the other one do?

Well my 86 TPI is in the storage building and the 85 LG4 I changed it on is long gone so I can't remember. I would go to Auto Parts and ask for a CTS for an 85 5.0 TPI and go home and see which one it looks like and change it.

The CTS should have a black and a yellow wire on the connector.
