DOHH!!! sooooo close!!: C5 vette
stopped at a light turning left a mid 90's, probably a 96 vette pulls up. the driver looks over at me and chuckles, I had some old soundgarden blaring, so he turned up his iron maden.
light went green and we both take off around the corner. them vettes definatly handle well, he was on the inside and had no trouble around the corner, I however was sideways around the corner trying to keep up
Anyway we make our way through traffic and we get a open space in traffic, he comes up to my rear bumper and stays there, so i floor it and I see the vette lights point up....
but vette boy aint pullin! in fact I'm pretty sure he was fading back ever so slowly!!
we slow down and find a light together, I look over and give him a nod, he just gave me a dirty look.
this is where it goes bad, the light goes green and I punch it.....
"pleh"
damn! Off-idle lean spot! The vette takes off and gets 2 cars, finally my motor catchs up, I spin through first, by now he's 3 cars ahead, through 2nd gear he stops pulling, by 3rd gear I was gaining on him finally, vette boy saw this and slammed the brakes hard.
vette brakes are better too, I did a flyby past him even though I had my brakes on full
I just KNOW I would took him if I got a decent launch!
ARGH!!! sooooo close
my next mod will have to be to rig up a cold air induction! I have an open element cleaner and this has happened to me lots after I've raced already and trying to race again. all that extra hot air messes up my off-idle circuit in the carb.. or somethin

I thought a '96 was a C5 that's around when they changed the body styles. Then again I'm no expert. But after driving a C5, I want one so bad.

96' was the last year of the C4 and 97' was the first year of the C5 and the newer bodystyle. And Mark don't we all just want a C5 vette?
i'll settle for a GN though myself..

Well it was an LT1 vette for sure, my understanding was that C5's LT1/LS1, and C4's were the 80's early 90's.
I'm probably wrong.
Mark, whats the one is in your sig? it was one style older than that one.
so I guess, a C4.
13.9 is at high elevation, spinning through first as usual.
I need to take it to the track and get real numbers.

A C4 vette is any corvette from 84-96 regardless of the motor. There were:
350 cross-fire injected
350 TPI (L98) with aluminum heads (i don't know if all came w/ aluminum
The LT5 which came in the ZR1 which was an absolutely amazing engine, DOHC, made in conjunction with Lotus
The LT1 2nd generation small block chevy
and the LT4 a souped up version of the LT1
In 97' the LS1 came about
and the ZO6 came later with the LS6/7/8

the C4 ranged from 84' - 96'. the body style changed somewhat in 91', and the C5 was introduced in 97'
84' : crossfire (high 15s)
85'-91' : TPI (high 13s... iron heads in 85 & early 86)
92'-96' : LT1 (low 13s)
90'-95' : LT5 (mid 12s) - ZR1 only
96' only : LT4 (high 12s)
97' & up : LS1 (mid 12s)
01' & up : LS6 (high 11s)
these are the BEST times these engines can achieve bone stock. this is done with proper launches, shifting, and such. the average person will usually be about a half second or so slower than the times i listed above. (ive seen a old guy in a stock LT1 vette run consistant low 14s... pathetic)
