pros and cons of dyno?

There is this shop about 15 min away from my house the has a brand spanking new dyno. anyway i just bought a 89 iroc z 5.7. i heard that running your car once on the dyno is like taking 5 runs down the track at one time. what do you think i should do?

my iroc has k&n air filters, 3 inch cat back exaust with dynomax muffler, possible head work and possible chip(Have to talk to the prevous owner i bought it form a family friend whos son in law owned the car)

just let me know what you think it will help alot thanks

The only con I see is the price.

Who said that, I don't see how it's any different than making one run or getting on it at a light.

do it!

how many miles does it have, and if its not too much and it runs clean and smooth, it should be okay, in decent shape these take lots of WOT pretty well, plus i like to hear the results of any thirdgen dynos, especially close to stock ones!

It's not hard on the car at all. They'll shift your car throught he gears until it reaches whichever gear is closest to 1:1 and then the WOT. Most of the time thats 3 or 4th gear.

It's definately worth it. The only con I can see is disappointment if you've had this magic power number in your head and the results come way lower than that.

IMO taking your car to a dyno is a complete waste of money...unless you are doing wideband tuning.

RWHP#'s are good for bragging rights only.

ET's are what counts (how fast). Take it to the track and get the numbers that count.

I have to say a dyno is a good way to tune your engine without shocking the whole setup. Remember, a 1/4 mile run is tough on everything where as a dyno run just revs it up pretty easily, no strain through the whole system. For people that street drive, a 1/4 run could be detrimental to the life of their car, where a dyno run can test if the engine is up to the task. Once you have a dyno run and then do a track run, you can see the disparagence between the track rated HP and the dyno. If you're losing a lot of hp more than air/temp/humidity can account for then suspension and the whole engine under load should be checked. If you didn't know you could pull the RWHP, how would you know if the track HP is the true best you can do? In my opinion, its not a waste of time. Knowledge is always a good thing, and with more data to work with, you can make your car run better for the final run at the track.

It varies, a local mobile dyno charges $65 for 4 pulls. Another place that has a ingound unit and chaters to the imports charges $100 a pull.

well, the dyno by me said he will charge me $140 for the first hour. But one of my friends know someone who will do it for like $100. Well well see what happens when i get the car on the road(have to finish paying for it first) and really find out what mods the prevous owner put in to it. But you bet ill post the results when i get it done.

this might sound kind of stupid, but how accurate can those really be? I mean, if you include mods like ram air, couldn't you actually have more HP while you're driving? I know it wouldnt be much, but....just wondering

I think a lot of it depends on how good the operater is .I have noticed such a HUGE variation in RWHP from very simalar cars with very close ET/MPH numbers posted around here.I have kinda lost faith in dyno #'s due to this.

Every dyno reads slightly different.

As I said earlier they are good for tuning or to see gains from mods, but other than that go to the track. Its how fast that counts.

Some doesn't sound right there if someone is charging almost $500 a run. You must have your numbers mixed up or something. A dyno run usually goes for around $110. no mater where you go to get it done. Check the numbers you posted and see if their right. And if they are never ever go to them. Waste of money.

I could see it cost $500 for an hour on an engine dyno since there would be a lot of setup and and tear down in mounting an engine to the stand.

What do you mean mounting the engine on the stand. Thats only for motors people buy and want to know the hp before they put the motor in the car. If the motor is already in the car you take it to a place thats hook computers up to the car and runs the back or front wheels(depending on read or front drive) on a big set of rollers. That give you your dyno power with the motor on the car. Do you really think prople would really get their motor ripped out just to se how powerful they were. It would be dumb. Go out and get a issue of like gm performance or car craft and you will see what i'm talking about.

Right, duhh.
I think it would be nuts to spend $500 to put a car on a chassis dyno, but that amount would make some sense for an engine dyno. The only people that make good use of engine dynos are dedicated racers that build multiple engines.

I don't need Car Craft to look that up.
