2001 civic EX vs. 88 IROC 305
2001 civic EX vs. 88 IROC 305
i've got a totaly stock IROC 305 (soon to have flowmasters and k&Ns and high flow cat)
he has a 2001 EX with cold air intake(5 spd) (and rims, and $1200 stereo, and 1200 paint job, and neons in the trunk, and well you get the idea)
i've never run my car at the track so i don't know what the 1/4 for a stock 305 would be
he claims he could squeze out a 14.9 on the 1/4 in his car, i laughed at him. His buddy who claims to own a late 80s monte carlo with a 424ci, bad mamba jamba, that i have never seen (it's 5 hours away) claims that he could get it into the 12s (the civic) for him i just pointed, gave a silent laugh and walked away.
what do you guys think?
i'm thinking i'll be seeing nothing but his headlights in my rear view. he talks trash but i haven't been able to get him to bite.

Race him and show him his car is slow. I don't think cold air intake does much if you dont make the entire engine more free flowing. Doesnt matter if he picked up another 10 HP from it you should still have him. He is probably weighted down by stereo equiptment. Post the results if you race but be wary because he maybe hiding a nitrous oxide kit or something like that.
i know he isn't hinding anything, he is a co-worker and he just bought the car about 2 months ago, so i know what he has under the hood (nothing)
i doubt he will bite anyway, just talk like they all do........

You will whoop him. All that stereo equipment weighs him down. Don't sweat it. I have to spend Saturday mornings cleaning the Hondas off the front of my car that it kills

Ya stereo equipment and all that flashy stuff makes a big difference. A guy at the track couldn't believe that his 02' GTi VR6 lost to my lincoln. Well the fact that he couldn't drive at all,had 18" rims on the thing and hundreds of pounds of stereo equipment played a part...dumb ricers..

last thing I read, the stock Civic EX ran a 17.2 1/4... Last thing I read, the stock Civic EX with CAI went 17.2... does nothing on stock engines! Add 200 lbs of stero equipment and he may be touching low 18's...
$.02

If its 1/4 mile you'll tear him a new *******, big time. If its a top speed race on the highway you still should be so FAR away because of your torque and I seriously doubt IROC's have that stupid limiter at 110mph.2001 Civic EX
127HP @ 6300 RPM MAX
114 @ 4800 RPM MAX <---
I like how the Si's have like 170hp (I think) but like 115lbs of torque lol.
There is this older body (boxy) prelude rice around here with a TERRIBLE sounding (I mean more than usual terrible) fart can muffler on it. I've embarassed him 3 times on this back road near me. I get him especially bad on this pretty steep turn that I can take at 90mph no problem and still stay in my lane, that FWD POS has to slam on brakes down to about 65-70 and be in the inside lane to take it and thats where I slow down to 65 and when he gets going to pass me I just slam it and he can't pass lol!! Bad thing is though, when my governor kicks in at 110mph he is riding my *** big time but I don't think that thing has the power to pass me at 110mph. Top speed is the ONLY issue you have to remotely worry about here man.
Go out and smoke him... Ohh make sure he talks PLENTY of crap like rice boys like to do, its always more fun to make them eat their own crap.
i know him and he is not going to race. i think he is going to give me some BS like wait till i get my turbo.....
....that is the big thing he is talking about these days is the turbo he is going to get soon.
the one thing i do give him credit for is he says he will not put "NAWS" in the car. says juice is for p**sys.
i told him i have nothing against the bottle, i don't plan on putting one in, i'm not into racing that much.

Hey Biker, you didn't get your IROC in Charlotsville, VA did you? It sounds like this one I looked at a while ago. If so, nice car, I just didn't have the money for it.
Oh and about the Civic, let him get his turbo and then race him anyway, beat him, and then laugh because he still can't keep up.

yea thats the car i got, thanks, i like it alot.
"the import car store"
i searched long and hard for it (about 5 months) and i stared at the pic in auto trader for like two months before i bought it. i couldn't find one around here that i wanted everything i saw was in the upper $4K for a car with over 100K on the oddometer. every car i looked at didn't have t-tops or needed fixing up. that wasn't what i wanted. i didn't want to spend alot of money fixing a car up. (the bike is the primary toy anyway) so my other car was about to die and i said f*ck it and i bought the IROC. spent more than i originaly wanted though but heck you only live once though.
the only prob i have had with it is the heater core went out about a month after i bought it. oh and one of the belts inside the front tire blew on me so i had to get two new front tires. other than that the car runs great. it needs a tune up though (doing that this week)
i put alot of miles on it the first two months i had it going to and from work about 50 miles a day. i managed to move to within a mile from work so i am happy. when i get my new job i'll be getting one of those $200 thowaway cars and park the IROC.
the only big thing i want to change is new rims i've got the crappy stock 15" z-28 rims on there. i want the 88-90 IROCs

I once had a kid claim his Civic ran 12's. I asked him if he ever ran at the track. He said no but he measured out 1/4 mile in front of his house and had a stopwatch and a laser gun. Claimed a friend timed him running 12.5 @ 120MPH! I laughed my *** off....this was a EX model civic too!
His turbo LOL!!! You'd still beat his *** even if he had a turbo in a dead stop 1/4 mile race...
He still has around 110lbs+ of torque even with turbo and you have what? at least 260lbs of torque STOCK? Plus since its not a twin turbo, turbo lag, just another second or two in your favor while that little engine gets the fan spinning up to speed.
Let him get his turbo LOL!!

Yep, Import Car Store was where I looked too. They had the car on the lot forever, I drove two hours to look at it, twice. The first time he had it listed at $9K, and as much as I wanted it, there was no way I could afford it. Then he dropped it too like $6K, but still wouldn't negotiate on it. If you don't mind my asking, what'd you end up paying for it? I got to drive it twice, and damn it was nice. The guy there was a jerk to me though, he said that he wouldn't even pass on my offer of 5k to the manager. Oh well, such is life. Glad it at least went to another thirdgen fan who'll take care of it.

about the only thing the car needs is some good rims and a new paint job, its begining to oxidize, but it still looks good though.
the heater core went out about a month after i bought it and i still need to replace one of my high beams, center brake light stuff like that. no big deal. oh and one of louvers went flying at 100 mph when i was chasing an eclipse.

If you lose, which you better not, then just throw your car away because no camaro should ever lose to a stupid Civic. Just my opinion.

Is your IROC a 5 speed or auto?
I think you can win anyways though.
People on here have been underrating the Civic a little- mid 16's in the 1/4 (if it's a 5spd) and it should be good for 125mph top end wise.

well two things
1. he will not bite, he has talked the smak but when i came back he has backed down. "wait till i get my turbo" is what he keeps saying. but he loves to get into the domestic vs. import argument.
his big thing is "there are civics that run 7s" so civics are fast. i tell he heck anyone can dump $30K into a car and make it run fast, what does yours run? he shuts up "....well when i ge my turbo...."
2. car is dead because the place where i took the car to get the oil changed failed to put the oil filter on all the way and all the oil came out and the engine seized up. going through the legal stuff right now, hopefully they will pay for a NEW engine.

Oh no, another 305'er with Boltons talking smack!! I know 5 Civics that would blow your car away from a stop or a roll. Yes they run 13's and faster and no they don't have the stock engines. You don't have to like it, but you gotta respect it.
Since when did 130 hp cars become fast? Did I miss someting in Ricers Weekly? Is there some new kind of magical import power that is better than domestic power? OOOHHH VTEC I'm so scared. Run the numbers boys.
2500 lb *****/ 130 hp = 19.2
3500 lb Fbod/250 hp = 14
For all of you out there who don't understand, it's like golf lower is better. BTW the civic would have to run over 200 hp to get the same power to weight and how long do you think that engine is going to last? Furthermore his torque is so peaky he can't even stay in the power band.
And for all of you 130 mph civic fans, parasitic losses will eat up that little hamster wheel so bad that it'll take him years to get going that fast.
Is that good enough or do I need to get a bigger stick?

Finally someone on this board who actually knows what they are talking about. All you people who think civic's are fast think it because the people who drive them tell you they are fast. ATOMonkey is right, dont fear the imports. About 3 of them are fast the rest just say they are fast.
Amen!! Finally, someone who touched on the TORQUE issue of Japanese imports!! Who gives a crap about them having a crapload of HP, its the low end torque that jap imports will rarely have to even catch our cars.. VTEC is their best answer and ATOmonkey is right!! They can't stay in that high *** RPM range for more than a few seconds, tops!
Only imports I respect, STOCK and with mods are European imports.. My friends 1990 944 Porsche 3.0L 4 banger can tear my 305 a new ******* and I'm sure give an IROC a run for its money...
Yes some civics I respect, but the real ones that run 12's-13's have SO much money dumped into them, they're fools because you could've spent the same money on a domestic car thats just as fast from the factory..

damn Biker, that really, really sucks about your engine. I sure hope you can work it out, my uncle fought long and hard over something similar, and it really sucks to go through. Did you not have time to change the oil yourself? I don't usually trust those places, for reasons like that. They should buy you a brand-new motor, you might even be able to talk to the manager of the place, and see if you can give him the bill for it, he pays the $2000-3000, and call it even, and leave the courts out. (who knows, a 350TPI crate might be cheaper than a 305 replacement, wouldn't that be some $@#%). Sometimes the lawsuits are more expensive and damaging, and its easier to work it out yourselfs. Just be polite and reasonable with the guy, either way, good luck man.
the good news is the they (the unnamed national chain of POS good for nothing $5 an hour oil changing place) called today.
they said they looked at the car and they said the engine is shot beond repair. and they also said it was their fault. yuppee!!!!!because of the low miles on the car they will pay for a rebuilt GM engine with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. that bill comes to $3,060
called the dealer and they advised me to front $400 and get a new Jasper (?305?) with a 3yr/50,000). i plan on doing at least that.
I also asked them what the price on putting a 350 in there.
they (the dealer) will be calling back on monday with the price.
so i am happy.
heck i'll take alittle pain in the butt and pay $400 for a new engine on a warranty
more info to follow.
the only thing that pisses me off is that i can no longer say that i own a car with only 33,000 original miles.
but i'll take the payoff with a new engine.
overall i'd say i haven't made off that great, just good.
now i keep trying to get some info off the dealer on what the new engine will be and he says it will be THE EXACT SAME TYPE.
(305/TPI) but i want numbers.

I hate it just as much as you, but I've seen this stuff in person. Yes alot of ricers with stock motors, boltons, and a bodykit think they run 12's (exagerate) ... the truth is alot of them who know what they're doing really do run what they say.

turbo also adds torque..not just hp..
turbo lag does not make the car slower than what it was N/A...so where does that second or two come from ..
man it makes 110lb stock ...
Even if the turbo kicked in instantly, it wouldn't make a difference. Bolting a turbo onto that car isn't going to do anything. Say the turbo adds 30%, no lets be real generous, 50% more power, and we'll pretend in both HP and torque. Well, hate to say it, but 50% of nothing is still nothing! his monster engine goes for 130 hp to 195hp, and torque goes to 165. Sure, that'll quicken it up some, but its all at 7000 rpms, and these numbers are about as generous as you can get, plus its doubtful he'll make full power because of all the other things you need besides a turbo to make a turbo car fast (boost controller, stronger fuel delivery, stronger internals, timing/compression adjustments, etc). I respect Civics that are fast, and Civics that are stock, because ones got power and the other is great for a commuter car/everyday car, but people like this that talk %$#! and can't back it up are just funny.

and he said the lag adds a second / two ...i corrected him about that too...

i respect the civics that are fast too..and i also hate idiots who think their civic is fast...
To demonstrate, get a WRX from a dealer, take it out, and start it rolling at 1k rpm, clutch all the way out. Now floor it. Feels bout the same as my Saturn with 200lbs of stereo equip and 4 full sized adults. Maybe slower... Now, as soon as you get to 2200 rpm and the turbo starts spinning, you light the rockets and your gone. But 'till then...
you have to spool that thing before the launch to get any power.

Yeah. I say even if an import beats you, he spent a lot more than you did making his car fast. But if he beats you, I'd congradulate him. He's made a ssssllllloowwwwwww car into one that can beat an American V8. That's not an easy task!
Just revel in the fact that American Sports cars will always be better: looking, and performing than any *****.....IMO. Thanks,
Matt S.

, just pointing out a Civic with a turbo shouldn't be feared. A) we already have alot of power with big displacement v8's
B) nobody could see a market for $5,000 - $10,000 upgrades to the already fast v8
C) manufacturers would not want to be responsible for the potential damage done by crazy people driving 400+ hp turbocharged v8's
The import crowd is different ... they need the forced induction to keep up. But now that we are entering into the age of 'insane power' with small displacement imports putting up stunning numbers on the dyno (800+ hp out of 3.0ltrs!! OMG!!), domestic owners might be looking into turbo setups very soon.
Check out www.ls1motorsports.com if you want to see some info on an upcomming 'bolton' (hehe) turbo kit for the 4th gen f-body LS1 platform. These bad boys will pump out enough power to smoke Sport Bikes on the freeway and are street legal. Who ever thought there would be a market for this much power on the street!!
BTW, you should never fear any car!! Much less a Civic!! Gah! But if its fast then you should be fair and respect it just like you would respect a fast v8. Even if you dont like it, its out there.

If you are going to get a power adder for a v8 get a supercharger. We have the power to use them unlike imports. Supercharges give u extra horsepower throught the rpm range not just at the higher end. Plus, superchargers are cheaper most of the time for v8's

does ur statement still hold???
actually any fast car should be feared...
Crazy Hawaiian, I agree, a turbo, when done right, is definately not a bolt on. The number of upgrades you do to take full advantage of the turbo really rule out the bolt-on status (I mentioned that in one of my posts about upgrading the fuel/air, boost controller, better internals, etc.). The reason I called it a bolton in this case was because the kid was talking about putting a turbo on a stock setup.
And I agree with you, the reason you don't see many turbo kits for our cars is we use good old fashioned displacement to make our power
.

. Including labor, I guess that's reasonable, but 4200 would seem like a lot for just the engine. Complete, out the door with the air and fuel upgrades to support I'd say its worth thinking about.
yea thats out the "out the door" price.
I'm going up there today to talk to the dealership. it seems the guy i always talked to doesn't know anything about what i was talking about.
me: hey hows it going? so what is the price?
him: $800
m: $800 thats everything?
h: no thats $800 plus$400 for the engine. $1200 on top of the $3000 that the insurance pays.
M: ok thats for a 350 right?
h: yea
M: what kind?
H: a 350....
M :what kind? is it the L98?
H ......uh hold on........(music)......yea thats it. I'm not one of the performance guys.
M: I'll think about (I'm coming down there to talk to someone that knows something)
h: ok........

Watched TF&TF the other day. My wife asks me: "Do all import drivers put that much money in their cars?" My reply: "No, they mostly just slap on the wing and fart pipe and stickers and such and join the ranks of the ricers."
back to my ***** friend.
i am begining to get sick with his rantings
"i've got a V-TEC one of the best engines ever made!!!!!!!!"
at 100,000 miles my car will be just broken in......
it's a 4 cylinder and it has 135 hp
i tryed to tell him my 94 4 banger sunbird 5spd was rated at about 115 hp. so i tell him that 135 hp is not that impressive.
another quote "my cold air intake gives me about 20-25 hp,
when i get my turbo it'll have another 85 horses
then i'll do this and that and I'll have close to 300 HP"
uhhh.......
then he goes off on how VTECs rule and people can make 7 sec (1/4 mile) civics.
i'm like where are you getting your numbers?
hey anyone can thump a car on the cover of a magazine.
thats all he does. i try to tell him that for all the money he wants to spend he is only going to run in the what? mid 14s
but i guess he is going to "run 9s" or something.
it's funny
oh and the big one is that he thinks those high rise wings work.
i go yea when you get into the 100s
he goes "no they start at around 5 mph.... stick your hand out the window of your car and you get "down force" so those wings work!!!!"
uhh.....
silly *****...........
