How much will I lose by?

I've got an 87 IROC 305 TPI with 700R4. I went ahead and knocked the cat out of the line, but I'm still running single exhaust. Otherwise, it's stock. For Homecoming, my friend is borrowing a 79 TransAm 400 with a Turbo400 Tranny. It's got dual exhaust and packs. Otherwise, it's stock. How will the race go?

I didn't think there were 400s in '79?

Either way, I'd say if you got toasted by that 3.1 car, you're dead.

The 1979 400 TA probably has 220 hp and somewhere in the neighbourhood of 320-350 lbs/ft of torque. They weigh 3730. A guy in a Pontiac mag ran 15.27 on street tires....but he had 3.23s and a Borg Warner T-10 transmission.

Probably a low 16 second car.

By the way...how do you rid yourself of catalytic converters? It's not a difficult operation, is it? You don't have to cut or replace the rest of your exhaust system, do you?

the TA has the 400 never been rebuilt stock engine. With my cat, I cut it out with a torch, took a pipe and knocked out the honeycomb on the inside, and put it back on. Then it still looks like it has a cat, but performs like it doesn't.

Not a good way to clear out cat. Because that spot in the cat that's knocked out creates a lul spot in the exhaust and accually isn't much of a performance increase at all. You would be better off just cutting the cat out and putting a staight pipe in where the cat was.
Later, Garrett

but it does help if the cat is half way plugged up atleast

but yeah I agree

straight pipe instead of the cat

or put a pipe through the cat

one of the two
